Lionel Richie Falls Ill Mid-Concert, Leaves Stage at Tour Opener
Lionel Richie was forced to cut the opening night of his Sing a Song All Night Long tour short Wednesday after experiencing a dizzy spell onstage at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, leaving fans with questions about the 77-year-old singer's health ahead of his next scheduled performance.
What Happened Onstage
Richie was about 55 minutes into his set when he began feeling unwell during a performance of his 1986 hit "Dancing on the Ceiling." Fan-filmed footage posted to social media showed him sitting down on a platform on the stage, visibly unsteady on his feet.
"What I have learned from my years of being in the business, when you're feeling dizzy, sit your ass down," he told the crowd. He acknowledged the moment with characteristic humor, adding, "I want you to know that's the first time in the history of 'Dancing on the Ceiling' I've done it sitting down."
Richie then moved to the piano to perform "Three Times a Lady" before announcing an unplanned intermission and exiting the stage. He did not return.
The Show Ends Early
Richie's five band members remained onstage for roughly 15 minutes before leaving themselves, with recorded music playing in their place. About 40 minutes into the intermission, saxophonist Dino Soldo addressed the audience directly.
"Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well," Soldo told the crowd. "He won't be able to continue. Additional information will be available."
The concert ended with approximately 90 minutes remaining in the planned set.
What Caused the Illness
Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris later told the Minnesota Star Tribune that Richie had shown no signs of illness before the concert. Paris said the singer had appeared healthy during rehearsals and soundcheck earlier in the day and suggested mild dehydration was likely the cause.
Tour Status and Upcoming Dates
Wednesday's show was the first of 26 dates on the Sing a Song All Night Long tour, a co-headlining North American run that marks the third edition of Richie's partnership with Earth, Wind & Fire following successful tours in 2023 and 2024.
The tour schedule includes stops in Chicago, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Toronto, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin, where the run is set to conclude Aug. 14. Richie is also booked for shows in Malta and the UK later this year.
Richie's next performance is scheduled for Friday, June 26 at the United Center in Chicago. As of early Thursday, no official update had been released confirming the status of that show.
A Veteran Performer's Long Career
Richie, who turns 78 later this year, has one of the most successful catalogs in popular music history. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee has sold more than 125 million albums worldwide and earned four Grammy Awards, an Oscar and a Golden Globe over a career spanning more than five decades. He rose to fame as a member of the Commodores in the 1970s before launching a solo career that produced hits including "Hello," "All Night Long" and "Endless Love."
His 2025 Say Hello to the Hits Tour grossed $17.8 million across 25 dates in Europe and Las Vegas, ranking among the top 10 highest-grossing R&B tours of the year.
