Miss North Carolina USA 2026 Dethroned Over Resurfaced Racist Posts
Brittany Boltinhouse has been stripped of her title as Miss North Carolina USA 2026, just over a month after being crowned, following a Miss USA Organization review into resurfaced social media posts described as racist, homophobic and transphobic.
The organization announced the decision Aug. 5, saying it was made jointly with Boltinhouse, her state directors and the Miss USA Organization. Thom Brodeur, chairman and CEO of Miss USA and Miss Teen USA, did not specify the exact conduct that led to the decision but addressed the situation directly in a statement.
"The Miss USA Organization does not tolerate racism, homophobia, transphobia, nor language that strips any person of their dignity, whoever they are," Brodeur wrote. "That is not a policy written for a press release. It is the floor of what it means to represent this brand."
According to NC Beat, the posts in question were allegedly written under an alias between 2017 and 2019 and included racially charged language, including repeated use of a racial slur, while Boltinhouse described herself as "toxic." Brodeur said he made the decision after determining the conduct had occurred "over an extended period of time."
A Title With Expectations
Brodeur emphasized that holding a Miss USA state title carries responsibilities beyond the competition itself. "A title here isn't a trinket," he said. "It is a position of trust, extended by an organization and accepted by a woman who agrees to carry a standard in public. When that standard is broken, the title cannot continue as though nothing happened." He added that state titleholders are "recruited, vetted and approved for competition at the state level" and that the organization acted "as soon as this reached us."
Despite standing by the decision, Brodeur also asked the public to remember the person at the center of the controversy. "There is a young woman at the center of this," he said. "She has been named, examined, and judged in public in a way that most of us would not survive, and she is still a human being with a family, a future, and a life ahead of her that is longer than this part of her journey." He continued, "I have never believed that accountability requires cruelty, or that holding a line means enjoying the fall of the person who crossed it," adding that "zero tolerance is a standard for conduct" but "not permission to strip someone of their humanity."
Brodeur said the timing of the announcement, ahead of any statement from Boltinhouse herself, was deliberate. "Brittany will soon issue her own statement, and that sequencing was deliberate. She should be the one to speak to this in her own voice," he said.
Who Takes Over the Title
First runner-up Myla Hadley will now assume the title of Miss North Carolina USA 2026 and represent the state at the Miss USA 2026 competition later this month. "Myla Hadley assumes the title of Miss North Carolina USA 2026 with our full confidence and our support," Brodeur said. "What's next, is best."
Boltinhouse, of Beulaville, North Carolina, was crowned Miss North Carolina USA on June 28. Representatives for both Boltinhouse and the Miss USA Organization have not yet responded to additional requests for comment.
