For burger fans, an In-N-Out road trip is practically a rite of passage. Soon, a Double-Double will be much closer to home for thousands of hungry fans.

The California-based burger chain has announced its plans to open five new restaurants in California, Arizona, and Utah later this year, continuing its slow and steady expansion across the western United States.

Where the New Restaurants Are Opening

According to In-N-Out's "Grand Openings" page, the new restaurants are planned for:

  • Stockton, California

  • San Tan Valley, Arizona

  • St. George, Utah

The company hasn't announced exact opening dates, but all five locations are expected to welcome customers later this year.

Why Doesn't In-N-Out Expand Faster?

If it seems like In-N-Out takes its time opening new restaurants, that's entirely by design.

Unlike many fast-food chains, In-N-Out refuses to freeze its hamburger patties. Instead, fresh ingredients are delivered regularly from company facilities, which limits how far the chain can expand while maintaining its quality standards.

That commitment to freshness is also why fans on the East Coast are still waiting. CEO Lynsi Snyder has said the company has no plans to expand there anytime soon because it doesn't want to compromise its quality.

More Than Just a Burger Stop

Founded in California in 1948, In-N-Out has built a loyal following with a surprisingly simple menu.

Burgers, fries, shakes, and a not-so-secret "secret menu" have helped turn the regional chain into something of a pop culture icon.

Of course, ordering "Animal Style" for the first time is almost a travel experience in its own right.

More Double Doubles on the Horizon

If you live near one of the new locations, your burger cravings may soon be a little easier to satisfy.

And, if you're nowhere near an In-N-Out? Well, at least you'll have one more excuse to plan that western road trip. Some people collect passport stamps. Others collect Double-Doubles.
