Disney World's New Trash Cans Spark Surprising Backlash From Fans
Of all the things Disney fans might feel strongly about, trash cans probably wouldn't be the first thing that comes to mind.
But, these aren't just any trash cans. Walt Disney World is replacing some of its familiar bins with solar-powered models. The rollout is expected to reach all four theme parks, Disney Springs, the water parks, and other resort locations.
And, while the new cans have some clever features, there's just one little problem: people can't eat off them nearly as easily anymore.
Disney's Trash Cans Have a Surprisingly Loyal Following
Disney's old trash cans have long been designed to blend into the different areas of the parks, with colors and details that complement their surroundings.
But, somewhere along the way, guests found another use for them. The flat tops became unofficial tables, especially at EPCOT, where people love to eat and drink their way around World Showcase during the park's many food festivals.
Those trash cans were a convenient place to set down a plate or drink along the way. The tradition became enough of an inside joke among park regulars that Disney has even sold merchandise inspired by its trash cans.
The New Cans Are Much Smarter
From Disney's perspective, the new design has plenty going for it. The solar panels power trash compactors inside the bins, allowing them to hold more garbage before they need to be emptied. They also have foot pedals, so people don't have to touch the lid with their hands.
Walt Disney Imagineering has been involved in making sure the new designs still fit their surroundings. The rollout began after Disney tested the technology at EPCOT's Germany pavilion, and the new bins have since appeared elsewhere in EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, and Animal Kingdom.
There's just one noticeable departure from the old design: the tops aren't flat.
Disney Fans Want Their Tables Back
That's where the great Disney trash can debate of 2026 began. When news of the resort-wide rollout reached Reddit, some fans immediately zeroed in on the loss of their makeshift tables.
One highly upvoted discussion jokingly described eating from the old bins as a Disney rite of passage, while others argued Disney would need to provide more places for people to put their food.
The new cans have caused another unexpected problem, too. Some people haven't been entirely sure how to use them. (They open with a foot pedal or by pulling the trash chute forward.) Reports of confused visitors eventually became common enough that Disney released an instructional video demonstrating how the new bins work.
Even Small Disney World Changes Can Cause a Stir
From a practical standpoint, the new Disney World trash cans make plenty of sense. They hold more garbage, offer hands-free opening, and should make it easier for cast members to keep the parks clean.
But, Disney has a funny way of turning even the most ordinary objects into part of the experience. For years, those flat-topped bins weren't simply holding trash. At EPCOT, they were holding snacks, drinks, and thousands of exhausted elbows.
The new ones may be smarter, but, for some Disney fans, they'll never make quite as good a table.
