Hilary Knight Named Captain of U.S. Olympic Women’s Hockey Team
Hilary Knight has officially been named captain of the U.S. women’s Olympic hockey team ahead of the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games, confirming what many around the program had long expected.
Knight, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in women’s hockey history, will be competing in her fifth Olympic Games. She has served as captain of the U.S. team since the 2023 IIHF Women’s World Championship and has been a central figure in the program for more than a decade.
“Whenever we sign up to play for Team USA, it's to win a gold medal, and that mindset hasn't changed,” Knight said at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic media summit in October.
Recent Success Sets Expectations
The U.S. enters the 2026 Games as a favorite, despite Canada holding the title of defending Olympic champion. The Americans have won two of the last three world championships and dominated Canada in the most recent Rivalry Series, outscoring their longtime rivals 24–7.
Knight played a key role in that success, scoring five goals during a four-game sweep of Canada last fall. Her performance reinforced her leadership role on and off the ice as the team prepares for another Olympic run.
Knight has already earned three Olympic medals, including gold at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, and remains one of the most experienced players in the international women’s game.
Alternate Captains Announced
USA Hockey also announced that forward Alex Carpenter and defender Megan Keller will serve as alternate captains for the Olympic team. Both players will be competing in their third Olympic Games.
Carpenter has been a consistent offensive contributor for the national team, while Keller anchors the blue line and brings extensive international experience. Together with Knight, the leadership group reflects continuity and stability within the program.
Olympic Opener Approaches
The U.S. women will open their Olympic tournament on Thursday, Feb. 5, against Czechia at the Milano Rho Hockey Arena. The matchup marks the beginning of another gold medal pursuit for a team that has remained at the forefront of international competition.
With Knight wearing the “C,” expectations remain clear as the Americans head to Italy.
