American Airlines Tightens Its 24-Hour Refund Policy

Spontaneous travelers, take note. American Airlines has updated its 24-hour refund policy, making it a little harder for last-minute travelers to qualify for a full refund.

The change took effect on July 29 and will bring the airline's policy in line with the federal minimum requirement, as well as several other major airlines.

Airline Refunds Are Changing

For years, American Airlines allowed travelers to cancel a flight within 24 hours of booking and receive a full refund, as long as the ticket was purchased at least two days before departure. That two-day window traced back to the COVID-19 pandemic, when American extended its refund flexibility to reassure hesitant flyers during a period of volatile travel restrictions.

Now, that booking window has changed. To qualify under American Airlines' refund policy, travelers will need to book flights at least seven days before departure and cancel them within 24 hours of purchase. If a ticket is booked within that seven-day window, it will generally follow its normal fare rules instead.

With this change, Delta Air Lines is now the only major U.S. carrier still offering the more flexible 24-hour refund terms on last-minute bookings, according to multiple aviation outlets.

Why Did American Airlines Make the Change?

The update may sound dramatic, but it isn't creating a brand-new rule. Since 2012, the U.S. Department of Transportation has required airlines to offer either a 24-hour refund or a free 24-hour fare hold for tickets booked at least seven days before departure. American had previously gone beyond that requirement by extending its 24-hour refund policy to flights booked just two days before departure.

Now, it's simply aligning with the same federal standard that many other airlines already follow. The change was first identified by the travel site View from the Wing before being confirmed by other outlets.

What If You're Booking at the Last Minute?

If you're planning a spur-of-the-moment trip, it's worth paying closer attention before you click "Purchase."

If you buy a nonrefundable ticket less than seven days before your flight, you may not be able to cancel a flight and receive a full refund within 24 hours. Instead, your options will depend on the fare you purchased. Some tickets may qualify for future travel credit, while others, including most Basic Economy fares, could be subject to stricter rules.

Travelers using AAdvantage miles aren't affected by this change. Award tickets booked with miles can still be canceled for a full mileage redeposit before departure.

One option that hasn't changed is American's free 24-hour fare hold on eligible bookings. If you're still deciding whether to travel, placing your reservation on hold can give you a little more wiggle room.
