French Onion Soup Flavors Hit Shake Shack’s Fall Menu
Shake Shack is ushering in fall with a menu inspired by one of the season’s most comforting dishes: French Onion Soup. The fast-casual chain, known for its creative twists on classic burgers and sides, has unveiled a limited-time French Onion Soup menu that blends caramelized onions, roasted garlic, and rich cheeses into a lineup of indulgent new offerings.
The centerpiece of the rollout is the French Onion Soup Burger, a hearty creation featuring a 100% Angus beef patty topped with Gruyère cheese, slow-cooked caramelized onions, crispy sweet onions, and roasted garlic parmesan aioli, all served on a toasted potato bun. For plant-based diners, the chain has also crafted the French Onion ‘Shroom Burger, a crisp-fried portobello mushroom stuffed with melted Muenster and cheddar cheeses, layered with caramelized onions and aioli.
For those who can’t decide, the French Onion Shack Stack combines the best of both worlds: an Angus beef patty stacked with the stuffed mushroom, Gruyère cheese, onions, and garlic aioli, creating one of Shake Shack’s most decadent sandwiches yet.
Bringing Soup Flavors to Burgers
The menu, nearly two years in the making, was designed to capture the depth and warmth of traditional French Onion Soup while staying true to Shake Shack’s signature burger style.
“With our French Onion menu, we set out to capture the depth of the classic soup,” John Karangis, Shake Shack’s executive chef and VP of Culinary Innovation, said in a statement. “We built flavor in layers, from slow-cooked caramelized onions and roasted garlic to melted Gruyère and crispy sweet onions—bringing this rich, indulgent soup to life in our favorite way: a delicious burger.”
Senior manager of culinary innovation Nick Wuest told USA TODAY that the team experimented extensively before landing on the final recipes. “We looked at all different ways of doing French onion,” Wuest said. “We made more pots of French onion soup than we knew what to do with.”
According to Wuest, the process included at least five major iterations, with input drawn from the team’s diverse experience across fine dining, diners, catering, and fast-casual kitchens. “It’s our collective experience as chefs in the industry. There’s a bit of everything we all like in it because all our feedback comes first from the culinary team,” he said.
More Than Just Burgers
The French Onion menu extends beyond burgers to include new sides and a seasonal beverage. Shake Shack is introducing Parmesan Garlic Fries—crispy crinkle cuts topped with parmesan cheese and served with roasted garlic parmesan aioli. Fans will also see the long-requested debut of beer-battered onion rings, made with sweet Spanish onions.
To round out the menu, Shake Shack is bringing back the Coffee Shake, a fan favorite blended with dark roast coffee and house-made vanilla frozen custard, returning just in time for National Coffee Day later this month.
When and Where to Order
The French Onion Soup menu will first be available through the Shack app starting September 9. It will then roll out nationwide in all U.S. Shake Shack locations beginning September 12. The Coffee Shake, however, will be available in stores starting on September 9.
