Pfizer to Slash Prescription Drug Prices as White House Prepares “TrumpRx” Website

Pfizer has agreed to offer significant discounts on some prescription medications for U.S. consumers and lower prices for Medicaid, according to a White House announcement. The discounted drugs will also be available for purchase through a federal government website, tentatively named “TrumpRx.”

President Trump stated that some Pfizer medications could see price reductions of 50% to 100%, with all new drugs introduced to the U.S. market sold at the “most favored nation” cost—the same rates paid by other high-income countries.

“Americans have been subsidizing research and development costs for the entire planet,” the president said, adding that the initiative could save taxpayers and consumers hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla described the agreement as an historic reversal of an unfair system, noting that Americans previously bore a disproportionate share of global pharmaceutical costs.

Background on the Pricing Initiative

The deal with Pfizer is part of a broader White House effort to implement most favored nation pricing with U.S. drug manufacturers. An executive order issued in May set the framework, threatening caps on Medicare earnings for companies that failed to lower drug costs.

While Pfizer and the White House have not released specific prices, officials say detailed agreements from pharmaceutical companies will be announced later this fall.

The announcement follows recent moves, including a planned 100% tariff on branded or patented drugs not manufactured in the U.S., which could affect some drug costs.

Political Context

The move comes amid ongoing debates over healthcare policy and government funding. While the administration emphasizes leveraging federal power to reduce drug prices, Democrats argue more comprehensive measures are needed to lower healthcare costs and support Affordable Care Act coverage.
