Michigan Parents Charged With Murder After Son, 7, Dies Weighing 255 Pounds
A Michigan couple has been charged with murder after prosecutors say their 7-year-old son died weighing 255 pounds, the result of what officials describe as months of severe neglect.
Damien O'Brien, 40, and Jessica O'Brien, 41, of Flint Township, were each charged with second-degree murder, torture and three counts of second-degree child abuse. Both are being held without bond at the Genesee County jail.
How the Case Came to Light
First responders were called to the O'Brien home on Nov. 4, 2025, after the couple's son, Casper, stopped breathing. According to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, paramedics who arrived to revive the boy found the home so cluttered with belongings that township police said they could not enter to assist. Casper was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
Casper stood 4 feet, 2.5 inches tall and weighed 255 pounds at the time of his death — well above the 50 to 73 pounds the CDC considers a healthy range for a child his height. The Genesee County Medical Examiner's office listed his cause of death as dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and weakened, with his weight cited as a contributing factor.
What Investigators Found
According to the criminal complaint, Casper was nonverbal, likely on the autism spectrum, and had not received medical treatment despite the family having health insurance. He had been taken to a doctor only once. Leyton said the boy was bedridden, had developed severe bed sores and rashes, and had reportedly subsisted on a diet of snack foods.
The home was also flagged for hoarding conditions, with investigators and Child Protective Services finding piles of trash throughout the house. Casper was never enrolled in school. Leyton said no school district, CPS office, or law enforcement agency appeared to have been aware the children existed prior to the 911 call.
Investigators say the couple's landlord told police he had grown concerned about the home falling into disrepair but had been told by Damien O'Brien that he could not go inside. The family reportedly left rent payments on the front porch rather than allow access.
One of the child abuse charges relates to the couple's 5-year-old daughter, who was also found in poor condition and was removed from the home and placed in foster care.
Leyton noted that the parents had called a veterinarian for a sick family pet the same morning Casper went into cardiac arrest. "They knew enough to call the veterinarian," he said. "But yet they don't take the kids to the doctor. It doesn't make any sense to me."
The Defense
Elias Fanous, an attorney representing Damien O'Brien, said he would not speculate on the circumstances of the case and that his client remains "innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law." An attorney for Jessica O'Brien has not yet responded to a request for comment.
A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Thursday. If convicted of second-degree murder, the O'Briens could each face up to life in prison.
