Billionaire Fashion CEO's Fatal Cliff Fall Is Now a Homicide Investigation — His Son Is the Only Suspect
What Spanish authorities initially ruled an accidental hiking death has become one of Europe's most closely watched homicide investigations — and the only witness is now the primary suspect.
Isak Andic, the 71-year-old billionaire founder of the global fashion brand Mango, died on Dec. 14, 2024, after falling more than 300 feet from a cliff in the Montserrat mountains near Barcelona. He had been hiking with his eldest son, Jonathan Andic, 45. Jonathan told police he was walking ahead of his father when he heard falling stones and turned around just in time to see Isak tumble off an unfenced section of the trail.
Police initially closed the case as accidental. Eighteen months later, Jonathan has been arrested, released on 1 million euro bail, ordered to surrender his passport, and formally placed under investigation for homicide. He has resigned from Mango. And his family is insisting he had nothing to do with his father's death.
From Accident to Homicide Investigation
The shift from accidental death to potential homicide began when a Spanish court ordered the case reopened after inconsistencies emerged in Jonathan's account of what happened on the mountain.
Investigators with the Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police force, alleged that Jonathan submitted a different cellphone as evidence than the one he had actually been carrying during the hike — a discrepancy that raised immediate questions. Police also alleged that his account of events was inconsistent with what they found at the scene, and noted that the section of trail where Isak fell is not considered particularly dangerous, fueling further suspicion.
An autopsy report cited by the presiding judge allegedly cast doubt on the theory that Isak slipped and fell accidentally. Investigators also gathered information from family circles suggesting the father and son had a strained relationship — a possible motive, according to the judge's order for Jonathan's arrest.
On May 19, 2026, Jonathan was arrested by Catalan police. He was released the same day after posting the 1 million euro bail. He is required to remain in Spain and cannot leave the country while the investigation continues.
The Mango Empire and What Came After
Isak Andic founded Mango in Barcelona in 1984. The brand grew into one of Spain's most recognized fashion exports, with stores in more than 100 countries and annual revenues in the billions. At the time of his death, Andic was one of the wealthiest people in Spain.
Six weeks after his father's death, Jonathan was elevated to vice president of Mango's holding company MNG, taking on a formal leadership role in the fashion empire alongside his sisters. He has since resigned from that position, citing a desire to focus on clearing his name.
"There is no legitimate evidence against him, nor will any be found," the Andic family said in a statement to Reuters. A family spokesperson told El País the family is "confident that this process will be concluded as soon as possible and that Jonathan Andic's innocence will be proven."
Jonathan himself has denied any involvement in his father's death, calling the claims against him unfounded.
Where the Investigation Stands
The case remains active. No charges have been formally filed — Jonathan is under formal investigation, which under Spanish law is a step in the judicial process that precedes any decision to charge. Spanish courts have a broad investigative mandate, and formal investigation does not constitute a finding of guilt or an indictment.
Investigators are continuing to examine Jonathan's phone records, call logs, and any photos from the day of the hike. The case is being overseen by a judge in Martorell, a town near Barcelona.
Isak Andic was survived by Jonathan and two daughters. The Mango brand has not issued a statement about the investigation beyond confirming Jonathan's resignation.
