Upper Crust Bakery Bread Recalled for Glass Risk
If you've recently picked up some frozen bread for the week ahead, you might want to double-check the label.
Upper Crust Bakery, a Maryland-based bread company, has just announced a bread recall affecting several popular frozen bread products sold in six states. The reason? A concerning discovery of glass fragments found on top of the bread.
According to a safety alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the issue has led to a Class II FDA recall, meaning the bread could cause temporary or medically reversible health effects. While not considered the most serious category of recall, it’s still something consumers should take seriously when it comes to food safety.
Warning: Bread Products Recalled in Six States for Glass Contamination
The recall involves three types of frozen bread rolls from Upper Crust Bakery; all sold in corrugated paper cartons and distributed frozen. Here's what's on the list:
Ancient Grains Hoagie Roll (4 oz, Lot #90, Recall No. F-0741-2025)
Multigrain Sourdough Rolls (18 oz, Lot #90, Recall No. F-0742-2025)
Whole Grain Multigrain Rolls (20 oz, Lot #92, Recall No. F-0743-2025)
These breads were available for purchase in:
California
Connecticut
Delaware
Maryland
Ohio
Pennsylvania
So, if you live in one of these states and have stocked your freezer recently, you may want to give it a second look.
In total, 818 cases of frozen bread are being recalled. The Multigrain Sourdough Rolls make up the bulk of the recall, with 699 cases, followed by 89 cases of the Ancient Grains Hoagie Rolls, and 30 cases of the Whole Grain Multigrain Rolls.
Why Glass Fragments Are a Big Deal
It might sound a bit odd – glass fragments in bread? But the danger is real. According to the FDA recall notice, consuming food with even small pieces of glass can lead to injuries ranging from chipped teeth and mouth or throat lacerations to more serious issues like intestinal perforation. It also poses a choking risk, especially for kids or older adults.
While no injuries have been reported so far, both the FDA and Upper Crust Bakery are urging anyone who bought the affected products to steer clear of them.
What to Do If You Have the Bread
Don’t eat the bread. Instead, either return it to the store where you bought it or toss it out in a secure trash can (so animals or others won’t accidentally get to it).
The company first notified the FDA on April 12, and the agency continues to monitor the situation closely.
Though this is only a Class II recall, it’s always better to play it safe when it comes to potential contaminants, especially something as dangerous as glass.
Upper Crust Bakery and the Importance of Food Safety
While it’s never good to hear about a food recall, it’s a good reminder of how important food safety practices are in the production and distribution of everyday groceries.
Upper Crust Bakery took action quickly once the issue was identified, and the FDA is keeping consumers informed to help prevent any harm.
If you have friends or family in one of the affected states, now might be a good time to shoot them a quick message or share this article. You never know who might have one of these products sitting in their freezer.
