Costco Cheese Bread Among the Latest Added to Expanding Salmonella Recall
What started in April with contaminated powdered milk from one California supplier has turned into one of the largest rolling food recalls of the year. As of June 1 the list of products linked to California Dairies Inc.'s contaminated milk powder spans dozens of items across categories you wouldn't normally connect — cheese bread, potato chips, boba tea powders, croutons, popcorn seasoning, trail mixes, taco pizzas, and more.
The newest addition dropped May 29 — Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread, sold at Costco, Walmart, Kroger, Target, Publix, Meijer, Jewel, and about a dozen other retailers nationwide. The affected single packs carry UPC 87037500511 with sell-by dates between 2/4/2027 and 4/21/2027. The 2-pack version is UPC 870375005098 with sell-by dates between 2/3/2027 and 3/25/2027.
If any of that is in your freezer right now, don't eat it.
Why This Recall Keeps Expanding
The contaminated powdered milk from California Dairies was used as an ingredient across a wide range of products from many different manufacturers. The FDA and USDA flagged from the start that more products would be added on a rolling basis as the investigation continued. That's exactly what's been happening since April — a new wave of affected products hitting the list every week or two as companies identify which of their products contained the tainted ingredient.
No illnesses have been publicly confirmed as linked to the recall so far. But salmonella is serious — particularly for young children, elderly people, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps, typically appearing within six hours to six days of consuming contaminated food. In severe cases it can spread into the bloodstream and become life-threatening.

What To Do
Check your pantry, freezer, and fridge against this list. If you have any of these products, don't consume them — return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or throw them away. Most of the affected products have best-by dates well into 2026 and 2027, meaning they're still actively on shelves and in people's homes right now.
The recall is still ongoing. More products may be added as the investigation continues.
