Taylor Swift Sends Signed Guitar to 8-Year-Old Fan After Viral Paper Airplane Video
Madeline Hulec is eight years old, a little shy, and a big Taylor Swift fan. She is also, as of this week, the owner of a signed Taylor Swift guitar and a handwritten note from the singer herself — all because of a paper airplane she tossed over her backyard fence in April.
The story began on April 21 in a Cleveland-area neighborhood, when Madeline overheard her new neighbor, 26-year-old musician Ethan Hayes, singing and playing guitar on his porch. Too shy to walk over and ask in person, Madeline wrote a note on a piece of paper, folded it into an airplane, and tossed it over the fence. The request: could he please play a Taylor Swift song?
Hayes found the note, walked to his porch, and played "Love Story" — Swift's beloved 2008 hit — while Madeline sang along from her window next door. Her mother, Natalie Hulec, 35, watched the whole thing unfold and hit record.
"We had the windows open, we're making dinner, and even Russell, my husband, shouted out a little 'Woo!'" Natalie told People.
From TikTok to Taylor
Natalie posted the video to TikTok with the caption: "Pretty sure we hit the neighbor lottery." The clip spread almost instantly. By the next afternoon it had gone viral, and by the time the dust settled it had racked up nearly four million views.
One of those viewers was Taylor Swift.
Hayes said Swift's team reached out to him directly through TikTok after the singer saw the video. They told him not to say anything until a package arrived. A few weeks later, it did.
Inside was a signed guitar and a handwritten letter from Swift to Madeline. "I just wanted to let you know that it made me SO happy that you asked your neighbor to play my song for you," Swift wrote. "You brought the biggest smile to my face! I'm sending you your own guitar, in case you want to learn to play it yourself one day."
A Pattern of Personal Gestures
The moment immediately struck a chord online — in part because it fit a well-established pattern. Swift has a long history of surprising fans with deeply personal gifts and gestures. During her record-breaking Eras Tour, she made headlines for tipping stadium workers and handing out large bonuses to crew members. She has sent flowers, gifts, and handwritten notes to fans during difficult times. The personal touch is a consistent thread through years of fan interactions.
Hayes described the response to the original TikTok as "overwhelmingly positive" and said Swift's involvement left the family stunned. Natalie confirmed the family was not expecting anything to come of the video when she first posted it.
As for Madeline — the eight-year-old who started the whole thing with a folded piece of paper and a shy request — she now has a guitar with Taylor Swift's name on it, and a letter to go with it.
The neighbor lottery, indeed.
