Mel Schilling — the beloved relationship expert and host of "Married at First Sight" UK and Australia — died Tuesday, March 24. She was 54.

Her husband Gareth Brisbane announced the news on Instagram, sharing that Schilling "passed away peacefully, surrounded by love." She had revealed her cancer was terminal just twelve days earlier, on March 12.

The two-year fight started with a colon cancer diagnosis in December 2023. In February 2024 she had a tumor described as the size of a lemon removed and was told she was in the clear. That relief didn't last. Small nodules were later found on her lungs. What followed was 16 rounds of chemotherapy over the next two years — and in December 2025, her oncology team told her there was nothing further they could do.

She kept filming through all of it.

What Her Husband Said

Brisbane's tribute was the kind of thing that stops you mid-scroll.

"In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life," he wrote. "It took all of her remaining strength. Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me."

He described a woman who became a first-time mom and a TV star at 42 and handled both without flinching. A woman who went through two years of chemotherapy, barely able to lift her head from the pillow some days, and never complained, never stopped showing up, and never missed a day of filming.

"I had 15 wonderful years with my soulmate, and it was the privilege of my life to be by her side," he wrote. "Life can be beautiful, and life can be incredibly cruel. But ultimately, life is fleeting, fragile, and tomorrow is promised to no one. If you can do anything to honor Mel, please live life to the full."

Schilling is survived by Brisbane and their 10-year-old daughter Madison.

Her Final Message to Fans

When Schilling went public with her terminal diagnosis on March 12 she didn't just share her story — she used her platform to say something that mattered.

She urged anyone who feels something is off with their body not to ignore it. Don't wait. Don't dismiss the feeling. Don't let anyone else dismiss it for you either. Her own diagnosis came after symptoms that could have been easy to brush aside, and she wanted people to take that seriously — to advocate for themselves loudly and early, because catching something late changes everything.

It was a final act of generosity from someone who had spent her career helping people — turning her own worst chapter into a warning that might save someone else's life.

The Tributes

Her MAFS UK costar Charlene Douglas said she was heartbroken and devastated, sharing that she had been with Schilling in her final days.

"I had the pleasure of spending time with Mel in her last days and will forever treasure the laughter, the memories and love we had for each other," Douglas wrote. "Mel's love for life, jokes and of course dancing will forever stay in my heart. What I wouldn't give to be dancing to Beyoncé with you right now."

Schilling appeared on MAFS Australia from 2019 to 2025 and MAFS UK from 2021 to 2025. Channel 4 said the network was immeasurably saddened by the news.

She showed up for her audience through every round of treatment. The least anyone can do is show up for themselves the way she asked.
