Connor Murphy, an American fitness influencer known for his bodybuilding content and association with the online "looksmaxxing" community, died Tuesday after drowning in a lake at a luxury housing estate in Thailand.

Murphy, 32, was renting a home in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan province, roughly 16 miles south of Bangkok, when he began behaving erratically in the hours before his death, according to Khaosod English, which cited Thai police and local media reports. According to the Bangkok Post, Murphy returned to the residential village in a hired vehicle and offered the driver 1,000 baht to continue driving him.

What Happened Before He Died

Murphy then approached another resident's car asking for a ride but was refused, according to the Bangkok Post. He reportedly grew agitated, shouting and rolling on the pavement before raising his hands as if praying. Neighbors called police, and when officers arrived, Murphy ran into a nearby lake on the property, where he swam until he became exhausted and drowned. A staff member at the residential village recorded video of Murphy's behavior before he entered the water.

Witnesses said the lake was more than 10 meters deep and that they did not attempt a rescue because of its depth. Some outlets, including the U.K. tabloid the Tab, have reported that police held back from entering the water out of concern that Murphy's build could pull a rescuer under, though that detail has not been confirmed across mainstream reporting. Divers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation searched for roughly 30 minutes before recovering his body about 20 meters from shore.

Investigation Still Ongoing

Police said an initial examination found no signs of assault, and Murphy's body was sent to Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Authorities have not announced an official cause of death beyond the apparent drowning, and full autopsy and toxicology results remain pending.

Investigators later found that the rented home, valued at roughly 22 million baht (about $600,000), had been vandalized, with black and yellow paint splashed across furniture, decorations and appliances throughout the property. Murphy and his girlfriend had been renting the home for about three months at 35,000 baht a month (just over $1,000), according to the homeowner, identified only as Ms. View. Police also said they found two unused syringes and several unidentified white pills in a bag inside Murphy's vehicle, though authorities have cautioned that the items do not by themselves establish a cause of death.

Murphy's girlfriend, who spoke to press under a pseudonym, said she did not notice any unusual behavior or problems from Murphy prior to the incident.

A Prominent Voice in Online Fitness Culture

Murphy, who was born in Texas, rose to prominence in the mid-2010s on YouTube, where he built a following through bodybuilding, fitness and prank videos. His main YouTube channel had roughly 2.36 million subscribers, with a second channel, Connor Murphy Unfiltered, drawing another 1.28 million, and his Instagram account had about 378,000 followers, putting his combined following at more than 2.5 million.

Murphy frequently referred to himself using the internet slang term "gigachad," used to describe an exceptionally fit and confident man, and became one of the more recognizable figures associated with "looksmaxxing," an online subculture centered on maximizing physical appearance through intensive grooming, fitness, cosmetic procedures and other appearance-focused practices.

Fellow fitness creator Tony Huge, who said he had collaborated with Murphy on videos as recently as 10 to 11 days before his death, said online that Murphy was "tapped into a level of consciousness that most people never will be" and had shared theories about consciousness that Huge said "some would say" bordered on conspiracy theories.

Days before his death, Murphy posted a YouTube video captioned "Obituary Pending," in which he made a pointed remark about society's relationship with mortality. Friends of Murphy confirmed his death publicly on July 8.
