Jon Bon Jovi Says Vocal Cord Woes Left Him Unable to Sing 'Happy Birthday'
Jon Bon Jovi says his voice is finally back, but he is opening up about just how bad things got before it returned.
The 64-year-old rocker revealed that at the lowest point of his vocal cord struggles, he could not even get through the simplest of songs. "I couldn't sing 'happy birthday,'" he said in an interview with Australia's "A Current Affair," according to Blabbermouth.
A Long, Slow Road Back
Bon Jovi underwent risky surgery in 2022 to repair an atrophied vocal cord. The procedure is known as vocal cord medialization. What followed was a recovery that took about four years, including three years of near-daily vocal therapy. He has credited vocal coaches and daily voice exercises with helping him get there, The News reported.
The singer admitted that if he had known how long it would take, he might have walked away from music altogether.
"I didn't lose faith," he said. "But had he told me it was gonna be four years, I might have contemplated saying, 'It's been great.'"
Instead, he said he had to put his trust in his doctor, who made no guarantees. Bon Jovi recalled the doctor telling him, "I promise you nothing," and urging him to "trust in the process."
Progress came slowly. "It was incremental. It was inches," he said.
He Refused to Let Fans Sing for Him
Bon Jovi said the long timeline was partly his own choice. People urged him to get back on the road after about two years, but he refused.
"That four years was my doing," he said. "I wouldn't go out after the two years."
He said he did not want to rely on the audience to carry the songs for him. "I've gone through hell, and I would not, could not compromise the legacy," he explained. "I could not, would not go out and hold the mic out to the crowd."
He credited longtime promoter Paul Dainty for his patience, saying he turned down tour offers from him again and again, Female First reported.
Before his surgery, Bon Jovi said he knew something was wrong. After his final show before the operation, in Nashville in April 2022, he told his wife, Dorothea, he thought it had gone pretty well. She disagreed.
"Joyous" to Be Back on Stage
Now, Bon Jovi says his voice is in "phenomenal" shape. "I could go tonight, no problem," he said.
He described the feeling of performing again as "joyous. Just joyous." He said he can now "sing without thinking about singing," a big change from earlier shows, when "every note I was white-knuckling that microphone."
He also said he has no concerns about tackling the band's biggest hits, noting that "Livin' on a Prayer" is still performed in the same key as always.
The comeback has not been without bumps. In July, he cut a concert short at Madison Square Garden because of a sinus infection during the band's nine-show residency there.
What's Next for Bon Jovi
After the Madison Square Garden residency and three stadium shows in the U.K. this summer, the band announced seven new dates for its Forever Tour in 2027.
The tour kicks off March 4 in Melbourne, Australia, followed by Sydney on March 11. The band will then play London's BST Hyde Park on June 24, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 15, Chicago's Soldier Field on July 21 and Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on July 28. The run wraps up Aug. 4 at Rogers Stadium in Toronto.
For fans who worried they might never hear him sing again, it is a comeback worth celebrating.
