John Travolta went to Cannes as a director and left as a viral sensation — and he couldn't be happier about it.

The 72-year-old Grease and Pulp Fiction star made his directorial debut at the 79th Cannes Film Festival with Propeller One-Way Night Coach, a passion project he adapted from a children's book he wrote in the 1990s. He walked the red carpet at the Palais des Festivals alongside his daughter Ella Bleu Travolta, 26, who also stars in the film — and both his appearance and the film's reception gave him plenty to celebrate.

But it was his look that sent the internet into overdrive.

The Transformation

Travolta arrived at Cannes in a black three-piece suit, round glasses, a white wool beret, and a pocket square — the full aesthetic of what he described as "an old-school director." He also debuted a dark beard and mustache, and his skin looked noticeably refreshed. The combination prompted immediate online reaction, with viewers on Reddit and X comparing before-and-after photos and debating just how different he looked.

"He looks like he paints landscapes and breeds alpacas," one commenter wrote on X. Others were more admiring. "John Travolta and Ella looking sharp together on the Cannes carpet — family moments like this hit harder after everything they've been through," wrote another.

Travolta's explanation for the ensemble was characteristically direct. "I said, 'I'm a director this time. You're an actor, play the part of a director, look like an old-school director,'" he told CNN. He added that dressing the part would help him remember the moment. "I'll know, 'Oh, that was Propeller One-Way Night Coach, that was Cannes, that's when I won the Palme d'Or,' and I'll have a vividness of it."

A cosmetic injector consulted by People suggested the refreshed appearance may be the result of a facelift combined with fillers. Travolta has not addressed those theories.

An Honorary Palme d'Or — and a Surprise

The bigger Cannes moment for Travolta was one he didn't see coming. Festival director Thierry Fremaux presented him with an honorary Palme d'Or in recognition of his lifetime of achievement in film — a tribute Travolta said left him genuinely stunned.

"I am completely surprised!" he said during his acceptance speech. "I can't believe this." He told Fremaux, who had hinted at "a special night" in advance: "You said this would be a special night, but I didn't know it would mean this."

The honorary award placed Travolta in rarefied company — previous recipients have included Clint Eastwood, Sophia Loren, and Jeanne Moreau.

The Film and the Family Moment

Propeller One-Way Night Coach is based on a book Travolta wrote in the 1990s about his childhood love of aviation. Travolta has been a licensed pilot since 1974 and has remained passionate about flying throughout his life. The film stars Ella Bleu alongside her father, making the Cannes premiere a genuine family milestone for a man who has navigated significant personal loss in recent years — his wife Kelly Preston died in 2020 after a private battle with breast cancer, and his son Jett died in 2009.

The reaction to both his look and his honorary award clearly landed the right way. "The biggest fun has been just the response," Travolta has said of moments like these. At Cannes 2026, there was plenty of it.
