Unicorn Frappuccino Returns to Starbucks, But Not for Long
Starbucks is bringing back one of its most talked about drinks of all time, but only for a few days.
The coffee chain confirmed the Unicorn Frappuccino will return to menus starting Aug. 15 for one weekend to close out the summer. The company says it is reviving the exact 2017 recipe rather than a reworked version: a mango-flavored base layered with a tangy blue drizzle, topped with whipped cream and a dusting of pink and blue topping. Stirring the drink triggers a color change, part of what made it a social media sensation nearly a decade ago.
A Nod to the Original Launch
The Unicorn Frappuccino first debuted in April 2017 as a five-day limited release and quickly became one of the most polarizing drinks Starbucks has ever sold. The bright, layered beverage flooded social media feeds, drawing comparisons to everything from cotton candy to less flattering descriptions from unimpressed customers. Behind the counter, baristas at the time described the launch as chaotic, with some venting publicly about running out of ingredients and dealing with sticky, colorful messes during their shifts.
This time around, Starbucks says it is preparing differently. The chain plans to add extra staffing support in coffeehouses over the weekend to help manage demand. The drink will also be offered in a single size, grande (16 ounces), with limited customization options, a change from the original run.
Where and When to Find It
The revived Frappuccino will be available at Starbucks locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Asia Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa starting Aug. 15. Starbucks has not said whether the drink will extend beyond that single weekend.
The comeback follows a smaller preview earlier this year. Starbucks served the Unicorn Frappuccino at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April, where the company was the event's official coffee, tea and Refreshers sponsor. That version was limited to the festival's Starbucks Coffeehouse setup and only served for a few hours each day across both festival weekends.
Mixed Reactions Before It Even Returns
Word of the drink's comeback spread on social media before Starbucks made its formal announcement. According to multiple reports, some baristas said they suspected a relaunch was coming after spotting ingredients associated with the original recipe showing up on inventory lists in recent weeks. Reactions among Starbucks employees have been mixed, echoing the divide that defined the drink's debut in 2017, with some bracing for a repeat of the chaotic original launch and others hoping for a quick, high-volume weekend.
For customers curious whether the hype still holds up, Aug. 15 marks the first chance in years to find out with the unaltered original recipe back on the menu, even if only briefly.
