Thyroid Medication Recalled Nationwide Over Potency Concerns

Vitruvias Therapeutics has issued a nationwide thyroid medication recall involving a specific lot of its 30 mg tablets because testing found they could be stronger than they're supposed to be.

The good news is that, as of this date, the company hasn't received any reports of adverse events connected to the recall. Still, anyone who has the affected medicine should contact their doctor right away.

Here's How to Identify the Recalled Medication

This isn't a recall of every thyroid medication or even every bottle from Vitruvias Therapeutics.

Only one lot of thyroid tablets is affected. Here's what to look for on the label:

• Lot number: 504950

• Expiration date: Sept. 30, 2026

The company released 3,655 units from the affected lot, and 1,955 were sold. The medication was distributed to Vitruvias Therapeutics' direct accounts between Jan. 31, 2025 and Sept. 30, 2025.

The Tablets May Be Too Potent

The recalled thyroid medication is normally used to treat hypothyroidism, also known as an underactive thyroid. But testing confirmed the tablets could potentially be superpotent, meaning they may contain more thyroid hormone activity than intended. 

Taking thyroid medication that's too potent can cause hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid. According to the recall notice, symptoms can include:

• Weight loss

• Heat intolerance

• Fatigue

• Nervousness

• Muscle weakness

• High blood pressure

• Chest pain

• Rapid heart rate

• Heart rhythm disturbances

Older adults, pregnant women, and infants may face greater risks, particularly if they use it for an extended period of time.

Don't Stop Taking the Medication On Your Own

This is the important part of this thyroid medicine recall. If you check your bottle and see that you have Lot 504950, don't stop taking your medication.

Vitruvias Therapeutics says anyone taking tablets from the recalled lot should first call their doctor. And, of course, anyone experiencing a problem that may be related to the medication should also call their doctor right away.
