Rupert Grint Returns as Ron Weasley in 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' on Broadway
Rupert Grint is heading back to Hogwarts, this time on Broadway. The actor who played Ron Weasley in all eight "Harry Potter" films will reprise the role on stage in "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," joining the production at New York's Lyric Theatre for a 17-week run beginning Feb. 2, 2027, and continuing through May 30, 2027.
The news was announced Tuesday morning, with the production's official Instagram account sharing a video of Ron's sweater alongside a script bearing Grint's name. Grint shared the announcement himself as well, posting a video of a "Cursed Child" playbill set to a fan-made remix of audio from the original film franchise, captioning it, "Dusting off the old robes⚡️New York- See you all in February."
What Grint Said About Returning to the Role
In a statement, Grint reflected on stepping back into the character nearly two decades after wrapping the film franchise. "Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can't wait to meet him again in this stage of life," he said. "There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron's shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new."
He added, "And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting. The first time I saw Cursed Child onstage, I was blown away and I can't wait to set foot back on Platform 9 ¾ and pick up where I left off. I am overjoyed to join this exceptional cast and crew at the Lyric Theatre this winter."
"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" is set 19 years after the events of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," with Grint set to play a grown-up version of the character he originated as a child on screen.
Following in Tom Felton's Footsteps
Grint becomes the second actor from the original film franchise to join the Broadway production, after Tom Felton's run as an adult Draco Malfoy, a casting decision that producers say drove a significant box office increase and has since been extended through Jan. 3.
Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender addressed Grint's casting in a joint statement, saying, "Rupert is not simply revisiting a role from his past. He is continuing a journey he began as a child and carrying it forward with all the life and experience he has gained since filming concluded, including a career that has taken him from film to television to acclaimed stage work on both Broadway and the West End." They added, "His return creates a powerful bridge between the story audiences first fell in love with and the story of family, legacy and the passage of time that 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' carries forward."
Grint's Career Beyond Ron Weasley
Grint previously appeared on Broadway in the 2014 production of "It's Only a Play" alongside Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, and starred in the West End production of Jez Butterworth's "Mojo" opposite Ben Whishaw. More recently, he starred in M. Night Shyamalan's Apple TV series "Servant," appeared in Hanna Bergholm's film "Nightborn" at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival, and stars in Paramount Pictures' upcoming film "Ebenezer," set to open this fall.
