More Than 10,000 Cases of Tofu Recalled Over Possible Ink Contamination

As you prepare to make tofu the star of your next meal, take a moment to look at the label. More than 10,000 cases of Hodo Chili Crisp Lightly Fried Tofu are part of a voluntary tofu recall spanning 29 states.

This one has an unusual reason behind it. According to Hodo, the printing ink from the packaging may have migrated into the tofu.

Here's what to look for in your fridge.

Which Hodo Tofu Is Being Recalled?

The Hodo tofu recall affects one specific product:

  • Product: Hodo Chili Crisp Lightly Fried Tofu

  • Package size: 8 ounces

  • UPC: 850565007842

The recalled tofu was distributed to wholesalers, retailers, and directly to consumers between January 16th and July 16th.

No other Hodo products are included in the recall.

Where Was the Recalled Tofu Sold?

The recalled tofu was distributed to wholesalers, retailers, and directly to consumers in 29 states in the U.S.

Because the recall covers such a wide area, the easiest way to know whether your tofu is affected is to check:

  • Product Name

  • UPC

  • Lot Code

  • Use-By Date

There are quite a few affected lots in this food recall, with use-by dates ranging from May into November.

That means some of the recalled packages may still be sitting in families’ refrigerators right now.

The corresponding use-by dates run from May 15th through November 7th.

Why Is Hodo Recalling the Tofu?

Hodo says it noticed discoloration while scaling up a new product. Additional testing of the Chili Crisp Lightly Fried Tofu found similar discoloration, leading the company to investigate the printed film packaging.

The concern is that the printing ink from that packaging may have migrated into the food. Hodo is still investigating the root cause and says it's evaluating whether heat or the chili oil may have played a part.

So far, no illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the recall.

What Should You Do With the Recalled Tofu?

If you have an affected package, don't eat it.

Hodo says customers can return the recalled tofu to the place of purchase for a full refund. You can also contact the company at recall@hodofoods.com to ask about a product voucher or coupon.

No illnesses or injuries have been reported, and no other Hodo products are included in the recall. 

Once you've checked your package, you'll know whether your tofu is good to stay on tonight's dinner menu.
