"Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" Set Decorator Dies in Suspected Murder-Suicide
Mary Kate Golding, a set decorator who worked on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and other productions, was found stabbed to death in her Queens home on Tuesday, July 21, with her husband later found dead in a nearby park in what police are investigating as a suspected murder-suicide.
According to the New York Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call reporting an assault at Golding's Astoria home around 12:24 a.m. Golding, 34, was found with a stab wound to the back and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Approximately six hours later, police responded to a separate 911 call reporting an unconscious person in nearby Astoria Park. There, officers found her husband, Joseph Azzaretto, 33, unresponsive; he was later pronounced dead. Police have said there is no indication of criminality surrounding his death and have made no arrests in connection with either death as the investigation continues.
The couple's 11-month-old son, Nolan, was found unharmed in the home. Law enforcement sources told several outlets that the deaths are believed to be connected to an earlier argument between the couple, and that Golding's friend discovered her body after Azzaretto called to tell her what had happened.
A Career Behind the Scenes of Beloved Shows
Golding, a graduate of NYU, worked in the art departments of several television and film productions, including The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Goosebumps, Marry Me, Meet Cute and The Big Sick. She had worked as an assistant set decorator on the second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
A neighbor near the couple's Astoria home told the New York Post that the couple had moved to the apartment from Pennsylvania only two months before their deaths. The neighbor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described Azzaretto, who also worked in the film industry, as difficult to be around, saying he had left threatening notes over parking disputes. These characterizations have not been independently verified by police.
A Family Marked by Prior Tragedy
Azzaretto's family had faced violence before. His younger brother, Nicholas Azzaretto, was charged with third-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter in 2020 in connection with the fatal shooting of their father, Frank Azzaretto. Nicholas later pleaded guilty to both charges and avoided prison time, instead being ordered to undergo a decade of monitoring, supervision and specialized treatment, according to court records cited by Us Weekly.
The investigation into Golding and Azzaretto's deaths remains ongoing, and police have not released further details about what led up to the incident.
