Federal investigators are working to figure out what sent a private jet plunging into a South Florida neighborhood on Sunday, killing all nine people on board and leaving a fiery crater in a busy road.

The Learjet 60 slammed into Military Trail near Greenacres in Palm Beach County at about 12:50 p.m., exploding into a massive fireball just feet from homes and passing cars. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis called it "a cataclysmic plane crash" and said the jet "looked like a missile going down."

What We Know About the Flight

The jet took off from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Seven passengers and two crew members were on board, Aerospace Global News reported.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that everyone on board died, calling the crash a "horrific tragedy." As of Monday, authorities had not released the victims' names.

FAA records show the 2004 Learjet, tail number N722BD, is registered to a Delaware company, and the plane is listed as available for charter online, according to CNN. The operator has not been publicly named.

The Pilot's Final Calls

Air traffic control recordings captured by LiveATC.net show how quickly the flight went from routine to disaster.

While cruising east at about 35,000 feet, the pilot calmly told controllers, "We have light, clear ice that is manageable and moderate turbulence," and asked to climb 2,000 feet. Moments later, the crew declared an emergency as the jet began losing altitude fast.

"We're descending 10,000 feet per minute," the pilot said, before reporting an "overspeed condition descending 20,000 feet per minute." The crew then warned, "We're going to crash into the ground," The Associated Press reported.

FAA data indicates the plane dropped from about 35,250 feet to 8,750 feet in roughly a minute. Videos recorded by drivers show the jet falling almost straight down beneath dark clouds before it hit the ground and exploded.

Weather Under Scrutiny

Heavy rain and thunderstorms were moving through South Florida at the time, and a flood watch covered Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. CNN reported that the jet passed through a strong storm cell a few minutes before it began to descend, though it is not yet clear whether the weather played a role.

CNN aviation analyst Mary Schiavo, a former Department of Transportation inspector general, said the footage shows the crew had lost control. "That is not a controlled descent," she said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation with help from the FAA. An NTSB go-team arrived over the weekend to examine the wreckage, flight-tracking data, weather and air traffic control communications, and the agency scheduled a media briefing in West Palm Beach for Monday. Bombardier, which makes the Learjet, said it is supporting the investigation.

The NTSB typically releases a preliminary report within about 30 days, while a final determination of the cause can take a year or more.

Hundreds of Residents Displaced

DeSantis said there were no reports of anyone on the ground being killed or injured. Still, the crash scattered debris onto nearby homes and cars and knocked out power to the area.

"Debris was everywhere. Debris hit my house," neighbor Anthony Blackmon told NBC affiliate WTVJ.

Because the crater and wreckage blocked the entrance to a nearby mobile home community, about 600 residents were relocated to two county shelters, according to Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel Flores. "They're investigating that, so the people can't stay there," Flores told WSVN.

Military Trail remains closed between 10th Avenue North and Purdy Lane/Alameda Drive until further notice, and nearby John I. Leonard High School was closed Monday.

A Deadly Year for US Aviation

CNN reported that the crash is the deadliest ever involving a Learjet 60 and the second-deadliest U.S. plane crash of 2026, behind the June skydiving plane crash in Butler, Missouri, that killed 12 people.

It is also the latest deadly aviation accident in South Florida this year, after a cargo plane overran a runway at Miami's airport in September, killing five.

Investigators are expected to share more details as the probe continues, including any information about the victims and what caused the jet to fall from the sky.
