JD Vance and Usha Vance Welcome Their Fourth Child Together
Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance have welcomed their fourth child together, the couple announced Sunday.
The Vances shared the news in a joint statement on social media, revealing that their son, Alec Neel Vance, was born Sunday morning. "We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning," the couple wrote. "Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother."
Alec joins siblings Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4. The couple thanked the medical teams who cared for the family throughout the birth. "The incredible military doctors and staff members of Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been a blessing," they said.
A Historic Birth
Usha Vance's delivery marks the first time in more than 150 years that a sitting vice president's spouse has given birth while in office. The last such birth came in 1870, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife, Ellen Maria Colfax, welcomed a child during his term.
JD Vance and Usha Vance announced they were expecting their fourth child in January, sharing the news on social media with the message, "Our family is growing!" At the time, the couple said they were looking forward to welcoming their son in late July.
Vance has spoken publicly about the decision to have a fourth child. Speaking at a White House event in Michigan earlier this year, the vice president, who has been mentioned as a possible 2028 presidential candidate, said he had to persuade his wife to expand their family.
"I remember when we decided to run for vice president, I said, 'Honey, I really want to have a fourth kid.' And she said, 'Well, you can become vice president or you can have a fourth baby,'" Vance said. "But, ladies and gentlemen, I am persuasive, because I got both."
In a separate interview, Usha Vance confirmed her husband's account, saying she had "never closed the door" on having a fourth child even after previously feeling their family was complete following Mirabel's birth.
About the Vance Family
JD Vance, 41, and Usha Vance, 40, met while attending Yale Law School and married in 2014. Their eldest son, Ewan, was born in 2017, followed by Vivek in February 2020 and Mirabel in December 2021.
As the family settles into life with four children, the Vances are expected to spend more time at a leased property in Middleburg, Virginia, a rural area outside Washington, D.C. Usha Vance has focused much of her public platform as second lady on childhood literacy, launching a summer reading challenge and an accompanying podcast over the past two years.
