Hailey Bieber Opens Up About PMDD Struggles After Giving Birth to Son
Hailey Bieber is opening up about a lesser-known health struggle she faced after becoming a mom: premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD.
The 29-year-old Rhode founder, who welcomed her son with husband Justin Bieber in August 2024, said she was diagnosed with the condition after giving birth and found there was little information available to help her understand it.
"A Really Intense and Special Journey"
In a new interview with Women's Wear Daily, Bieber said becoming a mother deepened her interest in women's health. "Especially after having my own child. That was just a really intense and special journey that I had," she said.
"After I had my son, I struggled with that a bit, and there's just not a lot of conversation or research around it," she added, according to The National Desk.
Bieber said speaking openly about it helps. "Conversation, for me personally, makes me feel less alone," she said, adding that talking about shared struggles makes it feel like "less of a lonely journey."
She was diagnosed roughly six months after her son was born, according to Reality Tea. She first discussed PMDD on the "SHE MD" podcast in March, where she said the days before her period became much more intense and brought on overwhelming thoughts and feelings.
What Is PMDD?
PMDD is related to premenstrual syndrome, or PMS, but is considered much more serious. It can cause severe irritability, depression or anxiety in the days before a woman's period begins, according to the Office on Women's Health. The condition affects up to 5% of women of childbearing age.
Bieber said she feels frustrated by how little attention conditions like hers receive. "As a woman, I feel frustrated by the lack of research, the lack of awareness, the lack of certain conversation around it," she said.
She also pointed to loved ones who have faced women's health challenges, noting that her sister has PCOS and that many of her friends have endometriosis.
Calls for more research into women's health have grown in recent years. The Trump administration recently announced plans to launch a new NIH division focused on the issue.
A Difficult Delivery
PMDD was not Bieber's only health challenge after giving birth. On the "SHE MD" podcast, she described experiencing a postpartum hemorrhage after delivering her son.
"And then I couldn't stop bleeding," she recalled, according to Complex. She said she could sense "the panic in the room a little bit" as her medical team worked to stop the bleeding. She was closely monitored afterward.
Bieber said she pushed for 44 minutes before her son arrived safely, and that she was "a little bit out of it" from the epidural when the bleeding started. Her OB-GYN, Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi, who co-hosts "SHE MD," also revealed that Bieber has a septate uterus, a condition that had complicated her pregnancy.
Bieber has been candid about other health issues in the past, including a mini-stroke at age 25 and a heart procedure that followed.
Her openness adds to a growing conversation among celebrities about postpartum health, following others like Hayden Panettiere, whose words about postpartum depression continue to resonate with fans.
Rhode Commits $5 Million
Bieber is also putting her company behind the cause. Rhode, which e.l.f. Beauty acquired in 2025, plans to donate $5 million over three years to the Foundation for Women's Health, a nonprofit research fund, according to AsiaOne.
"The visibility that Rhode brings is perhaps unparalleled," said Katy Brodsky Falco, the foundation's founder and executive director.
Anyone experiencing severe mood changes before their period, or after having a baby, should talk to a doctor about their symptoms.
