Former "American Idol" contestant Caleb Flynn has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn, in their Ohio home.

The sentence was handed down Monday, October 5, in Miami County Common Pleas Court, less than a week after a jury convicted the 40-year-old former worship pastor. Aggravated murder is the most serious homicide charge in Ohio, and life without parole was the maximum sentence Flynn faced.

A Quick Verdict

On October 1, jurors found Flynn guilty of aggravated murder, three counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault and three counts of tampering with evidence. They deliberated for about two hours. Judge Jeannine Pratt presided over the case.

Ashley Flynn, 37, was a middle school volleyball coach and educator. She was shot twice in the head while she slept at the family's home on Cunningham Court in Tipp City, Ohio, on February 16, 2026. She would have turned 38 a week later.

Flynn initially claimed that an intruder had broken into the house. Prosecutors said he staged the scene to look like a home invasion, and he was arrested within 82 hours, according to the Springfield News-Sun.

The Evidence Against Him

Prosecutors said Flynn had been having an affair. He exchanged about 107,000 text messages over a year with 24-year-old Alleigha Botner.

The night before the shooting, he texted her: "I choose you. I'm free. Actions will come tomorrow."

Data from Flynn's Apple Watch also showed he was awake and moving at a time when he claimed to be asleep. The gun used in the killing was never recovered, and no gunshot residue testing was done in the case.

Botner testified against Flynn at trial, telling jurors she now hates him and believes "that he murdered his wife." The defense did not call any witnesses.

'I Will Continue to Fight'

Flynn maintained his innocence at the sentencing hearing.

"I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife," he said. "I will continue to fight for my innocence."

His attorney, Patrick Mulligan, has said the defense plans to appeal and that "Caleb stands by his innocence," according to WHIO.

A Family's Heartbreak

The couple had been married for 15 years and had two daughters, now 12 and 10. The girls are being raised by Ashley's sister, Kayla Keyt, and her husband, Matthew Keyt.

In court, Kayla Keyt addressed Flynn directly. "I forgive you and Alleigha," she said.

Letters from the couple's daughters were also shared. "Mommy was a perfect person," one wrote, describing how much she misses her mother. The other ended her letter with a pointed message to her father: "And by the way, I don't plan on coming to see you."

Cases like Ashley's have drawn attention to violence by intimate partners, especially this month, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Earlier this year, a Georgia man was sentenced to life for killing his wife just 59 days after their wedding.

From 'Idol' Hopeful to Murder Convict

Flynn auditioned for Season 12 of "American Idol" in 2013, performing for judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Nicki Minaj. He did not advance to the show's Hollywood round. He later worked as a worship pastor. His brief turn on one of television's most-watched singing competitions helped the case draw national attention.
