Dog-Treat Camera Catches HVAC Worker Kicking Family's Chihuahua
A Florida air conditioning technician has been arrested after a homeowner's pet camera allegedly captured him kicking a customer's small dog until it lost consciousness while he was working inside the family's home.
The Sanford Police Department announced Thursday, Aug. 27, that 43-year-old Richardson Noel had been arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty. According to police, the incident occurred at 11:25 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, while Noel was servicing the home's air conditioning system.
How the Incident Was Discovered
The home's two dogs were alone with Noel at the time, according to the dog's owner, Ryan Menzies. A Furbo dog treat dispenser equipped with a camera, positioned in the living room, was activated by the motion of the family's 12-year-old Chihuahua, named Boomer, and recorded what followed. Menzies said his girlfriend received a motion alert on the camera's app and, upon checking it, saw Boomer having what appeared to be a seizure.
Sanford police said the footage showed Noel kicking the small dog, rendering the animal unconscious for a significant period of time. Menzies reported the incident to police after reviewing the video himself. "I was standing in the parking garage at work and I said out loud, 'Oh my God,' and almost started crying," Menzies said.
What Police Are Saying
Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith addressed the arrest in a statement, saying, "It is deeply disturbing that someone entrusted with entering a person's home to complete a service would violate that trust by viciously injuring a defenseless animal." He added, "The video is difficult to watch and shows the callousness of this individual."
Boomer's Recovery
Boomer was examined by a veterinarian following the incident. Menzies said the exam found no broken bones, though vets believe the dog may have suffered internal bruising that wouldn't show up on imaging. "They said nothing is broken. He's not favoring anything," Menzies said. "We think what he has maybe some internal bruising that you obviously wouldn't be able to see."
Boomer has since returned home and, according to Menzies, is eating treats, resting and becoming playful again. The experience has changed how the family plans to handle future home service visits. "Next time, either be home when the maintenance guy is going to be there or keep them behind a closed door," Menzies said.
Noel faces a charge of aggravated animal cruelty, and the investigation remains ongoing.
