Check Your Spice Cabinet: Ground Cinnamon Recalled Over Elevated Lead Levels
Cinnamon season is officially upon us. Unfortunately, one brand may need to come out of the spice cabinet for a less festive reason. Galil Importing Corp. is recalling a specific lot of Lior Cinnamon Ground Seasoning after tests found elevated levels of lead in the product.
The Lior cinnamon recall was announced on September 24, and includes cinnamon sold in six states over a period of about ten months. Before we sprinkle some into our morning oatmeal or start to bake our favorite fall treats, here's what we should look for.
Check Your Lior Cinnamon Ground Seasoning
The ground cinnamon recall is limited to Lior Cinnamon Ground Seasoning sold in 90-gram, or 3.2-ounce, transparent plastic containers.

The lot code is on the side of the container underneath the ingredient line.
According to the recall notice, the affected cinnamon was distributed between November 18, 2025, and September 7, 2026. It went to stores in:
Florida
Illinois
New York
New Jersey
Pennsylvania
Texas
That's a fairly big window, so, even if you don't remember buying cinnamon recently, it's worth giving that bottle hiding behind the nutmeg a quick look.
Testing Found Elevated Levels of Lead
The cinnamon recall of 2026 began after the Maryland Department of Health tested a sample and detected elevated lead levels. That discovery prompted the voluntary recall. Galil says the affected retailers have been told to pull the cinnamon from the shelves while the company looks into the source of the problem.
The good news is that no illnesses have been reported in connection with this cinnamon lead recall. Still, lead isn't something we want hanging around the spice cabinet. The World Health Organization says there’s no known safe level of lead exposure.
Children are particularly vulnerable because their bodies absorb more lead than adults do, and exposure can affect their brains and nervous system development. That's more than enough reason to leave this particular cinnamon out of the apple pie.
What To Do If You Have the Recalled Cinnamon
If the UPC and lot code on your container match, don't cook or bake with it. You can dispose of the container or take it back to the store for a refund.
