Thursday Night Football has a way of turning a regular matchup into something that feels a lot bigger.

There’s only one game on, everyone’s watching, and both teams have already packed plenty of chaos into the first two Sundays of the season.

The Atlanta Falcons are 0-2 after a close loss in Pittsburgh turned into a 34-3 blowout against Carolina. The Green Bay Packers are 1-1, but that record doesn’t tell the whole story. They blew a 12-point lead in Minnesota, then needed a fourth-quarter comeback and overtime just to get past the Jets.

Now, just four days later, they have to do it all again at Lambeau Field.

That short turnaround is what always makes Thursday nights so tricky. Most teams get a full week to recover and put together a game plan. Atlanta and Green Bay get four days. Practices turn into walkthroughs, players have less time to heal, and there’s hardly enough time to fix what went wrong, let alone build something new.

So Thursday probably won’t come down to who has the perfect plan. It’ll come down to which team can handle that fatigue and avoid falling apart first.

Michael Penix Jr. Gets Thrown Right Into It

Atlanta’s first two games made one thing pretty obvious: waiting around at quarterback wasn’t working.

Cooper Rush threw four interceptions and lost a fumble in two starts. The Falcons have a minus-six turnover margin and are the only team in the NFL that hasn’t run a single play in the red zone.

So Michael Penix Jr. is back.

Penix will make his first start since tearing his ACL last November. In nine starts last season, he threw for 1,982 yards, nine touchdowns, and just three interceptions. His arm also gives Atlanta a chance to push the ball outside the numbers, which feels especially important with Drake London and Kyle Pitts combining for only seven catches. That can’t keep happening.

Still, this is a rough spot for a comeback. Green Bay has seven sacks, and Lukas Van Ness just had the best game of his career with nine pressures and 1.5 sacks of his own against the Jets. Atlanta has allowed seven sacks themselves, and right tackle Jawaan Taylor is dealing with a rib injury.

Penix doesn’t need to rescue the entire offense on Thursday. He just needs to avoid giving the game away and make Green Bay respect something beyond the line of scrimmage.

Atlanta Has To Make Bijan Robinson The Answer

Atlanta actually has the biggest difference-maker on either side in this one, and it’s Bijan Robinson.

Robinson has 254 yards from scrimmage, including 173 against Pittsburgh. He’s been Atlanta’s leading rusher and receiver, which sounds great until you remember it also means nobody else has really done much of anything.

The Falcons have run for 277 yards and averaged 4.4 yards per carry. That’s the foundation Kevin Stefanski needs with Penix coming back. Robinson and Brian Robinson Jr. can help Atlanta stay out of third-and-long and keep Green Bay’s pass rush from taking over.

The problem is that Green Bay’s defense is built to wreck that plan. The Packers have allowed just 2.8 yards per carry and haven’t given up a run longer than 12 yards all season.

That’s the matchup that could swing the whole night. If Atlanta can run the ball, Penix gets play-action, simpler reads, and a chance to settle in. If Green Bay shuts it down, the Falcons are asking a quarterback coming off his third ACL reconstruction to beat a pass rush at Lambeau with almost no practice time.

Nobody wants that version of the game plan.

Green Bay Needs To Stop Beating Themselves

The Packers’ biggest problem isn’t talent. It’s all the stuff happening around it.

Green Bay's committed 26 penalties for 231 yards through two games. The offense has converted just four of 21 third downs and hasn’t converted any of their three fourth-down tries. They're also sitting at minus-two in turnover margin and still haven't scored a rushing touchdown.

And yet, somehow, the explosive passing game is still hanging around. Jordan Love has thrown for 532 yards and four touchdowns. Christian Watson and Matthew Golden have combined for 341 receiving yards, and Watson already has three scores by himself.

That should get Atlanta’s attention. The Falcons have given up 508 passing yards and six passing touchdowns, and they haven’t picked off a single pass. A.J. Terrell also missed Monday’s walkthrough with a groin injury. If he can’t play — or isn’t close to full strength — Love should have some chances to hit big plays downfield.

Green Bay just needs to stop turning every drive into a fight with the sticks and the officials.

This Game Could Set The Tone For Both Their Seasons

It’s only Week 3, but Atlanta can’t keep giving away games like this. An 0-3 start would put even more pressure on a new coaching staff, and this fanbase that just watched their team get blown out by 31 points at home.

Green Bay has plenty of pressure, too. This is the Packers’ home opener, and they’ve won 13 straight of them. A clean win would make the mess from the first two weeks feel fixable. Another sloppy performance would make it harder to dismiss as a fluke.

This one feels like it could snowball in either direction. If Green Bay wins and Atlanta loses, I could see the Packers settling in, going on a run, and getting their season back on track. All while the Falcons keep tumbling toward the bottom of the draft order.

But if Atlanta pulls it out, the Packers might be waiting a while longer for the help they need. And for Michael Penix Jr., a win could be the confidence boost that steadies the season after that atrocious start. He could take that momentum and give the Falcons a real chance to climb out of this hole.
