Burger King Reveals New Nuggets After Thousands of Complaints
Thousands of customers called and texted Burger King to tell the chain its chicken nuggets were rubbery, dry, and disappointing. Burger King listened.
The Miami-based chain announced Tuesday that it's completely overhauling its BK Chicken Nuggets, with the new version hitting U.S. menus on September 1. The updated nuggets are made with 100% white meat chicken, crispier golden breading, and a new marinade designed to produce a juicier bite. The packaging is changing too — out goes whatever they were using before, in comes a box format designed to make the experience better, particularly for people eating in the car.
New and updated dipping sauces are coming with them, including a limited-time Special Savory Sauce alongside revamped versions of classics like sweet and sour and honey mustard.
"We take guest feedback seriously, and when we received thousands of texts, calls, and comments telling us our nuggets needed a total overhaul, we listened," said Chef Amy Alarcon, Burger King's head chef for the U.S. and Canada. "Our culinary team evaluated every element of the experience, from the chicken and breading to the sauces. Throughout the process, we invited real guests — including some of our toughest critics, kids — to test and refine the recipe."
Part of a Bigger Comeback
The nugget overhaul isn't happening in isolation. Burger King has been in the middle of a multiyear menu reinvention built around consumer feedback, and the results have been striking. The chain recently reported an 8.5% increase in U.S. same-store sales last quarter — outpacing McDonald's by the largest margin in more than a decade.
That growth has pushed Burger King past Wendy's to reclaim the position of second-largest U.S. burger chain, as Wendy's deals with its own 7% sales decline. The remodeled Whopper was a key early driver of that momentum. Nuggets are next.
The McDonald's Question
Food journalists who've seen the promotional photos are already noting the obvious. The new BK nuggets look a lot like McDonald's McNuggets — familiar shapes, a tempura-style breading that resembles McDonald's golden coating rather than the crumb coat on the old BK version. One reviewer who got into Burger King's test kitchen said the new nuggets actually beat McDonald's on texture and juiciness.
Burger King has a long history of borrowing from competitors when it works — the chain launched a two-patty Big Mac dupe in the late 90s and its current Bacon King is a near-identical copy of Wendy's Baconator in everything but name. If the new nuggets can pull customers who currently default to McDonald's for their nugget fix, that's the whole point.
What's notable about this overhaul is that it wasn't marketing-driven — Burger King didn't decide to improve nuggets because an executive had a vision. Thousands of customers told them the product was failing. The chain went back to the kitchen. This is genuinely what consumer feedback is supposed to do in a competitive fast food market.
The old nuggets are going away September 1. The new ones are in. Kids have already been roped in as taste testers and apparently approved. The bar — rubbery, dry, and disappointing — was admittedly low.
