Brenda Fricker, Beloved Pigeon Lady in "Home Alone 2," Dies at 81
Brenda Fricker, the Oscar-winning Irish actress best known to American audiences as the Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has died at 81.
Fricker's agent, Phil Belfield, confirmed she died Thursday night in Dublin after a period of ill health. No cause of death was provided.
"It is with much sadness that I share the news that beloved actress Brenda Fricker passed away peacefully last night in Dublin, after a period of ill health, at the age of 81," Belfield said in a statement. "We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her. I was honored to know, love and work with her, and she will always have a place in my heart and in the heart of so many film and TV fans the world over."
A Historic Oscar Win
Fricker became the first Irish woman to win an Academy Award in 1990, taking home Best Supporting Actress for her role as Bridget, the determined mother of Christy Brown, in My Left Foot. The 1989 film, directed by Jim Sheridan, starred Daniel Day-Lewis as Brown, a writer and painter born with cerebral palsy, in a performance that also earned Day-Lewis a Best Actor Oscar.
During her acceptance speech, Fricker memorably dedicated the award to the real-life woman she portrayed, saying, "Anybody who gives birth 22 times deserves one of these."
Fricker later reflected on the weight of being the first Irish woman to win the honor. "I hate that phrase, 'You're the first Irish woman,'" she told RTE Radio. "It's lovely to have that in the history books, but it's a burden. People have expectations about it, and I don't give a shit about it, to be honest with you."
A Career Beyond My Left Foot
Fricker followed her Oscar win with a role in Sheridan's The Field later that same year, playing the wife of a British farmer. In 1992, she took on the role many American audiences remember best, the Pigeon Lady who befriends Kevin McCallister in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
Her career spanned decades and continents, including a supporting role in So I Married an Axe Murderer, a turn opposite Cate Blanchett in 2003's Veronica Guerin and a performance alongside Olympia Dukakis in 2011's Cloudburst. Her final role came in 2024's The Swallow, which Belfield said reflected her enduring talent even late in life.
In 2020, Fricker was ranked No. 26 on the Irish Times' list of the greatest Irish film actors of all time. She also received the inaugural Maureen O'Hara Award from the Kerry Film Festival in 2008, honoring women who have excelled on film. She recently published a memoir titled She Died Young, which appeared on the Irish Sunday Times bestseller list.
Tributes Pour In
Ireland's deputy prime minister, Simon Harris, called Fricker a "national treasure" in a statement. "She was a consummate performer who graced our screens and stages with remarkable talent and authenticity. Brenda brought depth and humanity to every role she undertook," Harris said. "She truly was among the greatest exports this country has ever produced and an ambassador for Irish talent on the world stage."
The U.S. ambassador to Ireland, Edward Walsh, also honored Fricker in a social media post, calling her "a giant of Irish film" whose work "brought Ireland's stories to the world and inspired generations on both sides of the Atlantic."
