Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose gravelly voice powered the 1983 anthem "Total Eclipse of the Heart," has died at 75.

Tyler died unexpectedly Wednesday night in a hospital in Portugal, where she had been receiving treatment for an illness, her family said in a statement Thursday. "Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for," the statement read. "We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy."

A Health Battle That Began in May

Tyler had been hospitalized since early May in Faro, Portugal, where she kept a home with her husband, Robert Sullivan, a property developer and former Olympic judo competitor. She underwent emergency surgery for a perforated intestine and was subsequently placed in a medically induced coma to aid her recovery. She emerged from the monthlong coma in June, though her family said at the time that she remained "very unwell and in intensive care." Tyler had been preparing for a summer tour before her hospitalization forced those plans to a halt.

Jo Stevens, the U.K.'s secretary of state for Wales, called Tyler a "Welsh music icon" in a social media post following news of her death.

From Gaynor Hopkins to Global Icon

Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in a small village outside Neath, Wales, Tyler grew up immersed in music, developing an early love for artists like Tina Turner and Janis Joplin. She adopted the stage name Bonnie Tyler and released her debut album, The World Starts Tonight, in 1977, scoring an early hit with "Lost in France." She followed it with "It's a Heartache" in 1978, which reached No. 3 in the U.K.

Her career reached new heights after she connected with producer and songwriter Jim Steinman, best known for his work with Meat Loaf. Steinman introduced her to "Total Eclipse of the Heart," a nearly seven-minute power ballad that became the lead single from her 1983 album Faster Than the Speed of Night. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks that October, making Tyler the first Welsh artist to reach No. 1 in the United States, and it has since surpassed 1 billion streams, a total boosted in part by renewed popularity during real solar eclipses in 2017 and 2024.

Tyler's raspy, powerhouse vocals earned her comparisons to Rod Stewart and led to three Grammy nominations over her career. She scored another major hit in 1984 with "Holding Out for a Hero," also written by Steinman, which appeared on the Footloose soundtrack. Her catalog of singles throughout the following decades included "Here She Comes," "If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)" and a 1995 cover of Air Supply's "Making Love (Out of Nothing At All)."

A Lasting Legacy

Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 19th, and was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2023 in recognition of her contributions to music. She continued touring and recording well into her later years, maintaining a particularly strong following across Europe.

Reflecting on "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in a 2023 interview with The Guardian, Tyler recalled immediately recognizing the song's power, even as she worried at the time that its unusual length might keep it off the radio. "I recorded an incredible song today," she wrote in a letter to a friend shortly after recording it. "The trouble is, it's so long, I don't think anybody will ever play it."
