19-Year-Old Falls to His Death Alongside Parents After Cellphone Argument
A teenage boy and his parents fell to their deaths in India after an argument over his new cellphone, according to police reports cited by multiple outlets.
Around 10 a.m. local time on Friday, August 21, 19-year-old Kunal Chandgude went up Khawadya Hill in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar after arguing with his parents over a payment tied to a cellphone he had recently purchased, according to The Indian Express, citing a police report.
His father, Murlidhar, 48, and mother, Sangita, followed him as he stood on the edge of a cliff and threatened to jump, in an effort to talk him down and bring him home safely.
A Three-Hour Effort to Bring Him Down
Police and fire personnel arrived at the scene shortly after the family's dispute escalated and spent roughly three hours attempting to convince Kunal to step back from the edge and return home with his parents. The standoff drew a crowd of onlookers as officers worked alongside Kunal's family to try to reach him.
Witness Sanjay Jadhav told NDTV that the effort to reach the teenager was intense but ultimately unsuccessful, saying, "The parents and others tried very hard to make him understand, but he didn't listen and kept standing on the edge of the hill. Police officials were also there." Jadhav added that Sangita in particular remained focused on pleading with her son throughout the ordeal, recalling, "The mother kept pleading with him not to jump."
Around 1 p.m., roughly three hours after the standoff began, Murlidhar moved closer to his son in an attempt to physically pull him back from the edge when Kunal fell. His father fell as well while trying to save him, and his mother, believed to have jumped after witnessing the fall involving her husband and son, died shortly after, according to reporting from Hindustan Times. All three bodies were recovered from the base of the hill by police and sent for post-mortem examination to confirm official causes of death.
Family Context Emerges After the Tragedy
In the days following the incident, additional details about the family's circumstances have surfaced. According to NDTV, Kunal's parents had reportedly been living separately in the years leading up to the tragedy, a period that followed the death of their eldest son from an illness roughly six years earlier, a loss that had already deeply affected the family.
The day before the fatal fall, Sangita had posted a video to her YouTube channel, where she had built an audience of more than 30,000 subscribers by regularly sharing mini-vlogs that often featured her son. In that video, posted just hours before the tragedy, she said there was "no point in doing anything for a person who does not value love," a comment that has taken on additional weight in light of what followed.
A Broader Concern in India
The case has drawn renewed attention in India to a pattern of family conflicts tied to smartphones and other costly devices escalating into tragedy, particularly as small consumer loans have become an increasingly common way to finance phone purchases. Reporting on the incident has emphasized that such tragedies are rarely about the device itself, and more often reflect underlying emotional distress, family conflict or financial strain that a disagreement over a phone can bring to the surface.
Authorities said an investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
