iOS 27 Brings Speed Boost to Older iPhones

Apple's iOS 27, announced at WWDC 2026, brings a redesigned CPU scheduler, expanded Apple Intelligence features, and continued support for older iPhones including the iPhone 11, which launched in 2019.

Artificial intelligence has just dominated the conversation at WWDC 2026.

That wasn't exactly surprising.

But, what did catch many iPhone owners off guard was Apple's decision to bring a number of those new features to older devices, while also improving performance on phones that are already several years old.

The latest Apple WWDC 2026 iPhone update is packed with AI-powered tools, smarter Siri features, writing assistance, image generation capabilities, and system-wide intelligence upgrades.

And, somehow, Apple also found time to make many supported iPhones run more efficiently.

iOS 27 Is Coming to Your Old iPhone – And It's Actually Going to Make It Faster

For years, major software updates have come with a familiar fear.

Will this make my phone slower?

Apple says the answer is no.

In addition to new features, the company introduced a redesigned CPU scheduler that will help distribute background tasks more efficiently.

The result is an iOS 27 performance boost that should help supported devices remain responsive during everyday use.

That news is particularly great for folks who have iOS 27 on older iPhones, many of whom thought their support would be ending soon.

Apple Intelligence Is Expanding Across the iPhone

The biggest headline from iOS 27 is Apple's continued expansion of AI.

The company showcased new writing tools that can help us:

  • Summarize text

  • Rewrite messages

  • Organize information

  • Generate content in various apps

Apple also demonstrated new improvements to Siri that will allow her to better understand context and handle more complex requests.

Additional AI-powered features include:

  • Smarter notifications

  • Enhanced photo organization

  • New image-generation tools that can create personalized graphics and visual content

Some of the most advanced Apple Intelligence features will require newer hardware.

But, many AI enhancements are being rolled out more broadly than some analysts expected.

The iPhone 11 Is Still Hanging Around

Leading up to WWDC, rumors suggested Apple might finally retire support for the iPhone 11.

Instead, the company announced full iOS 27 iPhone 11 support.

That's a significant milestone, considering the device first launched in 2019.

In an industry where many phones stop receiving major updates after just a few years, Apple extends their support much longer than many competitors.

For iPhone 11 owners, that means another year of security updates, new features, and access to many of the latest software improvements.

Which Devices Can Run iOS 27?

Apple confirmed that all current iOS 27 compatible devices include:

  • iPhone 11

  • iPhone 11 Pro

  • iPhone 11 Pro Max

  • iPhone SE (2nd generation and newer)

  • iPhone 12 lineup

  • iPhone 13 lineup

  • iPhone 14 lineup

  • iPhone 15 lineup

  • iPhone 16 lineup

  • iPhone 17 lineup

Not every device will receive every AI feature, but all supported models will gain access to the new operating system and its core improvements.

Apple Just Gave Older iPhones a Little More Life

Tech companies usually encourage us to buy something new.

That's part of the business.

What's interesting about iOS 27 is that Apple spent just as much time talking about improving existing devices as it did introducing new features.

Between the AI upgrades, the expanded Apple Intelligence tools, and the performance improvements, this update will give older iPhones a little more breathing room before we have to start thinking about an upgrade.

And, if you’re still holding onto your iPhone 11, that may be the best WWDC surprise of all.
