General Motors is recalling more than 43,000 of its 2022 model-year full-size SUVs after identifying a transmission defect that could lead to rear wheel lock-up and increase the risk of a crash.

The recall affects 17,178 Chevrolet Tahoes, 7,616 Chevrolet Suburbans, 7,820 GMC Yukons, 5,270 GMC Yukon XLs, 3,609 Cadillac Escalades and 2,239 Cadillac Escalade ESVs. All are equipped with a 10-speed automatic transmission featuring an electronic transmission range select system.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a transmission control valve inside the 10-speed transmission may be susceptible to excessive wear over time. That wear can cause a gradual loss of hydraulic pressure within the transmission system.

How the Defect Can Escalate

The transmission control valve plays a key role in regulating fluid pressure and ensuring smooth gear changes. If the valve wears prematurely, drivers may first notice harsh or delayed shifting.

In rare cases, the pressure loss can cause the rear wheels to briefly lock or, in more serious instances, remain locked. Safety regulators warn that such a failure, particularly at highway speeds, could reduce vehicle stability and increase the likelihood of losing control.

The issue is especially concerning in large SUVs, where stability is critical due to vehicle weight and size.

The problem mirrors earlier concerns raised in previous GM recalls involving similar 10-speed transmission systems in trucks and SUVs.

Scope of the Recall

The recall covers more than 43,000 vehicles globally, all from the 2022 model year. Chevrolet’s Tahoe accounts for the largest share of affected vehicles, followed by the Suburban and GMC Yukon models. Cadillac Escalades make up a smaller portion but remain part of the defect group.

GM said newer production runs are not affected because updated software was introduced to better detect early signs of valve wear.

Owners can check whether their vehicle is included by entering their vehicle identification number in official recall databases. Notification letters are scheduled to be mailed beginning March 30.

GM’s Remedy: Software Update

Rather than immediately replacing hardware components, GM’s primary remedy is a software update to the transmission control module.

The updated software is designed to monitor valve performance and detect abnormal wear before a serious failure occurs. If the system identifies a developing issue, it will limit the transmission to fifth gear and display warning messages on the dashboard.

Restricting the vehicle to fifth gear is intended to prevent the specific high-speed downshift conditions that could trigger rear wheel lock-up.

GM has also indicated that if the software identifies signs of critical wear, additional mechanical repairs may be required, potentially including replacement of affected components. Dealers will perform recall-related repairs at no cost to vehicle owners.

“The safety of our customers is the highest priority for the entire GM team, and we’re working to remedy this matter as quickly as possible,” a GM spokesperson told FOX Business.

Broader Industry Context

The recall highlights the increasing complexity of modern vehicle transmissions. Automakers have adopted multi-speed automatic systems to improve fuel efficiency and performance, but these systems rely on intricate hydraulic and electronic controls.

While software monitoring can help detect problems earlier, the durability of mechanical components remains essential, particularly in larger vehicles designed for family transport and towing.

For now, GM says the software solution is capable of detecting wear thousands of miles before a severe failure occurs.

Owners of affected 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV models are encouraged to watch for recall notifications and schedule service promptly once available.
