Seniors have been living in their homes for years without security systems, but today’s technology gives seniors a crucial layer of protection using smart devices against common threats. Thankfully, these devices give us peace of mind when it comes to the security of our household.

Ring Video Doorbells

Ring Video Doorbells have been a new staple for homes. It provides a live video feed so you can see what is happening around your front door at all times and have a log of it. In addition, you can even talk and listen to whoever is on your doorstep without ever opening the door.

Whether you're in the kitchen or out of town, you can monitor your front step using your smartphone. Basic models start at $99.99, and optional monitoring plans begin at $3/month. It’s a simple, effective way to avoid unwanted interactions and feel more in control.

Smart Motion Lights

Smart lights that activate with motion aren’t just convenient—they’re a major deterrent to intruders. Options like Ring’s Floodlight Cam combine bright LED lights with HD video, automatically illuminating dark areas when movement is detected. You can choose plug-in, wired, or solar versions depending on your preference. They start around $99 and are easy to install near driveways, garages, or entryways.

Smart Sensors: Keep Doors and Windows Safe

Sensors are stuck onto windows and doors and send alerts wherever you want to send them when something is opened unexpectedly. It can be alarming when a door opens out of the blue, but the proper authorities can be set to be contacted if it does happen. Many kits include them, or you can buy them individually for $20–$30. They work seamlessly with most smart systems and don’t require any drilling or tools.

Wi-Fi Connected Sirens

If somebody gets into your house, its important that they get the message that they need to get out. Wi-Fi-connected sirens blare up to 110 decibels when triggered, enough to scare off an intruder and alert neighbors. Brands like Ring and SimpliSafe are examples of these pieces of technology. They usually start around $30 - $50.

Emergency Alert Buttons

A panic button is a must-have for seniors living alone. Whether wall-mounted or worn as a pendant, one press alerts caregivers or emergency services. Ring’s version costs $34.99 and integrates with its alarm system. Many systems offer fall detection and two-way talk features. Place buttons by beds, tubs, or stairs for quick access.

Setup Tips

Most of these devices are able to be set up using DIY methods. However, some are more difficult or may require certain skills. Typical handymen are able to install any of these but here are some tips for installation for each type of security technology:

  • Ring Doorbell: Download the Ring app. Charge the device fully. Screw the mounting plate to the wall or doorframe. Snap the doorbell into place and connect to Wi-Fi. Other video doorbells may require you to connect the doorbell to wires in your home.

  • Smart motion Lights: Choose a location with strong Wi-Fi and visibility. Use screws or adhesive mounts to secure a light. Connect the app and adjust motion zones and brightness.

  • Smart Sensors: Clean and dry the surface. Peel the adhesive and place one half on the door or window and the other on the frame. Pair with the control hub via the app.

  • Wi-Fi sirens: Plug into a power outlet. Connect the device via the app or smart hub. Test the alarm volume and responsiveness.

  • Emergency Alert Buttons: Mount on walls or carry as a pendant. Pair with the alarm base station or smart hub. Test functionality to ensure proper emergency signaling.

Most systems offer both free and paid tiers. Ring’s Basic plan ($3/month) allows video history and sharing. For $10/month, Ring Protect Plus adds 24/7 monitoring and extended warranties. SimpliSafe starts at $18/month for monitoring. Avoid long-term contracts unless you're sure the system fits your needs.
