An AI Agent May Have Deleted an Entire Season of a Reality Show

Five weeks before the scheduled premiere of the second season of The Challenge Sverige — Sweden’s version of the popular MTV reality competition — the entire edited season vanished from the production company’s servers. No recovery was possible. The November 22 premiere has been pushed to 2027. Hundreds of days of editing work are gone.

How it happened is where things get disputed.

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation, reported that production company Mastiff had granted an AI agent access to its server — and that the agent deleted the completed season’s edit, with no way to restore the files. The story spread quickly.

TV4, the network that airs the show and which confirmed the technical failure, pushed back on the AI explanation. Program director Mia Lindqvist told Aftonbladet that the account of an autonomous AI agent acting independently “is not true,” saying “the big problem is that their backup didn’t work.” She characterized the incident as a product of “human factor” — though that framing, notably, doesn’t fully rule out AI being involved in some capacity. It just disputes the characterization of an AI acting on its own without human direction.

What everyone agrees on: the edited season is gone, the original footage remains intact, and the production team at Mastiff will have to recut the entire season from scratch.

The Show’s Host Found Out From a Reporter

The show’s presenter Ahmed Berhan had an appropriately surreal reaction when Aftonbladet broke the news to him directly during an interview.

“You know, some days you just have to accept that you’re living in a f***ing sitcom,” he said, laughing.

When the reporter suggested an AI agent might have been responsible, Berhan replied: “Is that true?! I knew AI would be the death of me.”

Why This Story Is Plausible Even If Unproven

AI agents — software systems that can take sequences of actions autonomously, including file operations — have been involved in several deletion incidents in recent years as organizations have rushed to integrate them into workflows. The scenario of an AI agent with broad server access deleting files it shouldn’t have touched is not science fiction. It has happened in other contexts.

That’s also part of why the story spread so fast. “AI agent deletes season” reads as a completely believable headline in 2026 in a way it simply wouldn’t have a few years ago. Production companies increasingly use AI tools in editing workflows, and TV4’s own program director acknowledged as much — noting that most production companies now incorporate AI in their processes.

But “believable” and “confirmed” are different things. The specific claim — that an autonomous AI agent acted independently to wipe the files — comes from anonymous sources in a Swedish-language newspaper and has been explicitly disputed by the broadcaster. Mastiff has not released an official account. The full picture of what happened on those servers isn’t public.

The Structural Problem, Whatever the Cause

There’s a harder lesson here that applies regardless of whether AI was the culprit: a completed, irreplaceable edit of an entire television season had no working backup.

Whether the deletion was caused by an AI agent, a failed script, a human error, or some combination — the outcome would have been the same. A months-long edit that represented hundreds of days of work was stored in a way that left it vulnerable to permanent loss with no recovery path. That’s a production infrastructure failure that would be catastrophic under any scenario.

Backup systems that aren’t independently tested, and broad server access granted without strict guardrails on destructive operations, are risks that exist with or without AI in the picture. The presence of AI agents in workflows makes that risk more urgent to address — but the underlying vulnerability predates them.

The season will now be rebuilt from the original footage. Someone, somewhere, has a very long few months ahead of them.
