Where was Alexi Lalas?

That's the question Fox Sports viewers were asking on June 19 when the veteran soccer analyst was noticeably absent from the main studio desk — and his co-hosts Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry made absolutely sure no one forgot it.

Host Rebecca Lowe broke the news to the panel. "Chaps, Alexi left us."

Ibrahimovic didn't miss a beat. "Who?"

The studio erupted. Henry piled on: "Your plan worked, Rebecca." Lowe tried to stay out of it. Ibrahimovic turned to the camera and delivered the finishing blow: "America, you're welcome."

Lalas hadn't been fired or demoted. He'd been reassigned to an on-site role outside Lumen Field in Seattle, where he joined Carli Lloyd and Clint Dempsey for coverage of the U.S. men's national team's Group D match against Australia. Lowe assured viewers he'd be back. Whether Ibrahimovic was relieved or disappointed is unclear.

It Didn't Start There

The Zlatan-Lalas tension has been building since the tournament opened. Early on, Lalas made a bold prediction about Norway striker Erling Haaland's place in soccer history. "If this man has a big World Cup, boom, right to the top," Lalas said, nodding toward Ibrahimovic. "I love you Z, but I will take Haaland over you in terms of legendary status."

Ibrahimovic laughed. He appeared to file it away for later.

The moment that first broke the internet came after France's 3-1 win over Senegal on June 16. Lalas agreed with former U.S. captain Landon Donovan's take that France had played "arrogantly" in the first half. Ibrahimovic cut in immediately.

"It's not arrogance, it's confidence," he said. "Ignorant people will say it's arrogance. Intelligent people will say it's confidence."

Henry's wide-eyed reaction sitting beside them went viral just as fast as the quote.

The Lie Detector Didn't Help

The night before Lalas disappeared from the desk, Ibrahimovic appeared on "After Hours With James Corden" strapped to a lie detector. When asked whether a panel of four Zlatans would be better than the current Fox desk, he said yes. Ruled: true. When asked whether he respected the opinions of all his fellow analysts, he said yes. Ruled: a lie.

Back on set the next day, Ibrahimovic went around the desk with his assessment. "Rebecca, you look good. Thierry, you look sharp, monsieur." Long pause. "Alexi... we can discuss."

He also posted a video to X of himself and Henry passing a soccer ball around the studio while deliberately keeping it away from Lalas.

Who Are These Guys

Lalas, 54, is one of the most recognizable figures in American soccer — a former U.S. men's national team defender who started all four games at the 1994 World Cup, the last time the tournament was held on U.S. soil. He's spent years as one of Fox Sports' most opinionated analysts, known for strong takes and an even stronger personality.

Ibrahimovic, 44, is one of the greatest strikers in soccer history — Sweden's all-time leading scorer and a two-time World Cup participant who won league titles across Europe before retiring in 2023. He joined Fox Sports' World Cup coverage this cycle alongside French legend Thierry Henry.

Two massive personalities. One desk. A full month of tournament still to go.

Lalas is coming back. Zlatan is ready.
