Rams Blow 16-Point Lead in 30-26 Loss to Broncos
The Denver Broncos erased a 16-point halftime deficit and survived a wild finish Sunday night, beating the Los Angeles Rams 30-26 at Empower Field at Mile High. The game wasn't decided until the final snap, when Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga intercepted Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford in the end zone as time expired.
The win moved Denver to 2-1, while the Rams fell to 1-2.
The Rams Controlled the First Half
Los Angeles dominated early, building a 16-0 lead by halftime. The Rams were playing without star receiver Puka Nacua, their top pass-catcher, but still moved the ball with ease against Denver's defense.
The problem was finishing drives. The Rams settled for three field goals in the first half, and none were longer than 40 yards. Those missed chances to score touchdowns kept Denver within reach.
Denver's Third-Quarter Comeback
The Broncos' offense finally came alive in the third quarter. Quarterback Bo Nix threw a touchdown pass to receiver Pat Bryant, then connected with Jaylen Waddle on a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 16-8.
On its next drive, Denver tied the game. Nix found tight end Nate Adkins for an 8-yard touchdown, and Bryant caught another two-point conversion to make it 16-16 with 2:15 left in the third quarter. In the span of two drives, the Rams' entire lead was gone.
A Record-Setting Pick-Six
The Rams regained a 19-16 lead with 8:40 left in the fourth quarter, but Hufanga delivered the game's first major swing soon after. On a third-and-6 from the Denver 38, he jumped a short pass from Stafford and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown, giving the Broncos a 23-19 lead.
The interception returned for a touchdown was the 33rd of Stafford's career, breaking a tie with Brett Favre for the most in NFL history.
Stafford, a 17-year veteran, responded quickly. He completed three straight passes to receiver Konata Mumpfield, including a 48-yard touchdown when Mumpfield got behind Denver cornerback Riley Moss. That put the Rams back in front 26-23 with 3:38 remaining.
Two Penalties Kept Denver's Winning Drive Alive
Denver's final drive nearly stalled several times. A holding penalty left the Broncos facing second-and-20, but Nix hit Bryant for 39 yards and Troy Franklin for 21 to reach the Rams' 15-yard line.
The Rams then appeared to get a stop on third-and-6 from their own 11, but cornerback Josh Wallace was flagged for defensive pass interference. Wallace had actually come down with the ball for what looked like an interception, and NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay said on replay that he didn't believe Wallace committed a foul, NBC DFW reported.
Los Angeles thought it had another stop on third-and-goal from the 5, but an illegal use of hands penalty on safety Quentin Lake gave Denver a fresh set of downs. Nix appeared to score on a 2-yard scramble to the pylon, but the touchdown was overturned on review. A couple of plays later, he dove in from 1 yard out to give Denver a 30-26 lead.
The Final Play
The Rams had about 40 seconds to answer, and Stafford drove them deep into Denver territory. Los Angeles spiked the ball to stop the clock with two seconds left, but a false start pushed the Rams back to the 19-yard line.
On the game's final snap, Stafford threw toward receiver Davante Adams in the end zone. Hufanga stepped in front for his second interception of the night, sealing the win and capping one of the best individual performances of the weekend.
What's Next
The Broncos, who opened the season with a loss at Kansas City, now travel to face the undefeated San Francisco 49ers in Week 4. The Rams head east to play the Philadelphia Eagles next Sunday.
