Packers Dominate Bears, 49ers Escape Seattle in Week 5 Afternoon Slate
Sunday’s afternoon slate in Week 5 delivered a pair of late comebacks, a record-setting start for one quarterback and a dominant performance in one of the NFL’s oldest rivalries. The 49ers stayed unbeaten, and the Chargers are still looking for their first win. Here’s how every afternoon game played out.
Broncos 23, Chargers 17
Denver trailed 17-10 entering the fourth quarter, then its defense took over. The Chargers’ five fourth-quarter possessions ended with a punt, a turnover on downs, a fumble, an interception and a game-ending sack, netting just 19 yards on 19 plays. Quarterback Bo Nix tied the game with a 5-yard touchdown pass to receiver Courtland Sutton, and kicker Wil Lutz added two field goals off takeaways to seal it. The Broncos improved to 3-2, while the injury-riddled Chargers fell to 0-5.
Lions 45, Cardinals 21
Detroit’s much-criticized defense finally showed up, holding Arizona without a single third-down conversion in the first half as the Lions built a 24-7 halftime lead. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs powered the offense with 151 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Jared Goff threw three more touchdown passes without a turnover, becoming the first player in NFL history with 12 or more touchdown passes and no giveaways through his team’s first five games. The Lions moved to 3-2, and the Cardinals dropped to 1-4.
Packers 31, Bears 7
Green Bay dominated its longtime rival behind a deep passing attack. Quarterback Jordan Love completed 25 of 31 passes for 367 yards and two touchdowns, both long strikes to receiver Christian Watson, finishing with a career-high passer rating. The Packers’ defense forced five turnovers, the team’s first game with five or more takeaways since 2016, and Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent was benched for Case Keenum in the fourth quarter. Both teams are now 3-2.
49ers 32, Seahawks 29
San Francisco stayed perfect at 5-0 after a turnover-filled NFC West slugfest. With the game on the line, quarterback Brock Purdy leaned on receiver Mike Evans, who finished with seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown and also caught a key two-point conversion. The 49ers responded to falling behind with a 95-yard touchdown drive and a go-ahead field goal. Seattle had one final chance, but receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba couldn’t hang on to a wide-open third-down pass late in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks fell to 3-2, while San Francisco won its fifth straight regular-season game in Seattle.
