Olympic Athletes Sha’Carri Richardson and Christian Coleman Arrested in Traffic Incident
American Olympic sprinter Christian Coleman was arrested Thursday night in Winter Park, Florida, during a traffic stop that also resulted in the arrest of his girlfriend, fellow sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson, according to court records.
Coleman faces charges of alleged possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting an officer without violence. The incident occurred during the same stop in which Richardson was taken into custody for allegedly driving more than 100 miles per hour in a gray Aston Martin, documents reviewed by The Post show.
Fellow Team USA sprinter Twanisha Terry was also present at the scene and received a citation for stopping on a limited-access highway after pulling over to check on Richardson and Coleman, according to an arrest affidavit. Terry was not arrested and was allowed to leave the scene.
Police Say Coleman Interfered With Traffic Stop
According to police reports, Richardson was initially pulled over for excessive speeding and dangerous driving behavior. During the stop, Coleman allegedly pulled over nearby in a black Jeep and exited his vehicle before approaching officers.
Police instructed Coleman to return to his car, but authorities say he repeatedly failed to comply and attempted to involve himself in the traffic stop by explaining why Richardson had been speeding.
Officers reported that Coleman refused to provide identification when asked and continued to disregard instructions to stay out of the interaction. He was then arrested on a charge of resisting an officer without violence.
Police further alleged that as Coleman returned to his vehicle, he dropped an object in the grass. A search of his Jeep reportedly uncovered a glass smoking device in the center console, as well as approximately 20 grams of marijuana.
Details of Richardson’s Arrest
A spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Richardson was “dangerously tailgating and traveling across lanes of travel to pass other motorists” at the time of the stop.
According to police, Richardson told officers she was speeding because her back tire was underinflated. She also said her phone accidentally changed the vehicle’s settings and she did not know how to fix the issue.
Richardson was arrested on one charge of dangerous excessive speeding and cited for four civil traffic infractions, court records show.
Both Richardson’s Aston Martin and Coleman’s Jeep were towed from the scene. The two were transported to an Orange County jail in separate vehicles.
Bond Posted Later That Night
Coleman later posted a $1,000 cash bond, paying $500 for himself and $500 for Richardson, allowing both to be released later that evening.
Terry, who had taken Richardson’s purse when she was cleared to leave the scene, did not face further action beyond the traffic citation.
Prior Incident Between the Athletes
The arrests come less than a year after Richardson was arrested in July following a domestic violence incident involving Coleman at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
That case drew significant attention due to Richardson’s high-profile status as one of the most recognizable figures in American track and field. Both athletes are prominent members of Team USA and have competed on the world stage.
Neither Richardson nor Coleman has publicly commented on the latest incident.
Case Remains Active
Court records indicate that the charges against Coleman and Richardson remain active. No court dates have been announced publicly as of this week.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional details beyond those included in arrest affidavits and court filings.
