Jordan Devey, Former Patriots Super Bowl Champion, Dies by Suicide at 38
Jordan Devey, a former NFL offensive lineman who won Super Bowl XLIX with the New England Patriots, has died by suicide at 38.
His wife, Linsey Devey, shared the news Friday, July 24, in an emotional social media post, noting that the day would have marked the couple's 15th wedding anniversary. She remembered him as a devoted husband and father to their four children, describing them as having inherited his "eyes, freckles, and compassion." "You were our hero and our hearts ache in your absence. We love you. We miss you," she wrote, recalling his final words to her: "we'll talk soon."
A GoFundMe page set up to support the family described the loss as sudden and devastating. "Tragically, Jordan took his own life, leaving his family to navigate an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking time," the page reads.
A Seven-Season NFL Career
Devey entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis in 2013, signing first with the Baltimore Ravens before joining the New England Patriots later that year. He appeared in seven games during the Patriots' 2014 championship season, part of the roster that won Super Bowl XLIX. The following year, the Patriots traded him to the San Francisco 49ers, where he saw the most extensive action of his career, starting nine of 15 games at guard.
He went on to spend three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2016 to 2018, followed by stints with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2019 and the Buffalo Bills in 2020, before retiring in 2021. Over his seven-year career, Devey appeared in 44 regular-season games with 21 starts.
A Life Devoted to Mentorship
After football, Devey became a coach at Eagle High School in Idaho, where he was remembered as a deeply valued mentor. "He was a devoted husband to Linsey and a loving father to their four children," the GoFundMe page said.
"Jordan spent countless hours volunteering as a coach for his own children's teams and for the athletes at Eagle High School, where he was deeply loved by the players who saw him as a mentor, role model and friend." The tribute also noted his commitment to his church community, where he offered "support, counsel and friendship to anyone in need."
Devey's mother, Leslie, told Fox 13 in Salt Lake City that the family believes he may have been living with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma, though she said the condition cannot be confirmed given the circumstances of his death. CTE can currently only be diagnosed posthumously through brain tissue analysis.
