The San Antonio Spurs have removed Jacob Tobey as the team's lead play-by-play announcer following public allegations that he cheated on his longtime girlfriend with the sister of Spurs forward Lindy Waters III.

The allegations surfaced late Tuesday night on Tobey's own Instagram account, though his girlfriend later confirmed she was the one who posted them. "This is my girlfriend of six years. But I cheated on her with Loren Waters," one post read, tagging Waters directly. "So feel free to continue following me if you really think I'm a good guy because I'm not." A follow-up post showed a photo of Tobey and Waters together, captioned "Me and the new girl." The posts quickly went viral before being deleted.

The Fallout

Front Office Sports first reported that Tobey is out as the Spurs' lead play-by-play announcer, a job he had held since the 2024-25 season after replacing longtime broadcaster Bill Land. Neither the Spurs nor representatives for Tobey have provided comment on his removal.

Tobey, a Sandwich, Massachusetts, native and 2018 Suffolk University graduate, built his broadcasting career before arriving in San Antonio, including internships with the Celtics and Patriots, a stint as weekend sports anchor at Denver's 9NEWS, and play-by-play work for Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network. He had been considered one of the sport's rising young broadcasting talents.

A High-Profile Vacancy

The timing adds weight to the fallout. San Antonio is coming off a run to the 2026 NBA Finals, where the team lost to the New York Knicks in five games, and boasts one of the league's most talked-about young cores, headlined by Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. That has made the now-vacant play-by-play position one of the more sought-after jobs in sports broadcasting.

The opening comes at an already complicated moment for the Spurs' broadcast future, since the team has been without a local television home for its game broadcasts since FanDuel Sports Networks shut down at the end of last season. Teams typically try to keep their broadcast booths consistent even through network changes, and Tobey had appeared to be in line to remain in his role once a new rights deal was finalized, before the allegations became public.

Lindy Waters III signed a one-year contract with the Spurs last summer. Neither Waters nor his sister has publicly commented on the situation.
