The 162-game regular season is over, the playoffs have wrapped up, and it’s time for the World Series. The two biggest markets in the sport are going to be represented as the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers are set to face off once again.

If you’re not sure what to expect, how to catch every game, or have some other questions, we’ve got the answers that you’re looking for. Let’s dive into your exhaustive preview of the 2024 World Series.

Who’s Playing in the World Series?

The two biggest markets in Major League Baseball are going to be represented in the 2024 World Series as the New York Yankees square off with the Los Angeles Dodgers. On an interesting note, this is the 12th time the Yankees and Dodgers have faced in the World Series, making it the most frequent matchup in the history of the Fall Classic.

For context, the 2024 World Series is the 120th in history, and this is the 12th time these two teams have faced, meaning they’ve played each other in 10% of the World Series in history. This will be the Yankees 41st overall appearance in the World Series, while the Dodgers will make their 21st appearance.

In head-to-head matchups in the Fall Classic, the Yankees currently have the edge, as they’ve won eight of the previous 11 meetings. New York also holds the record for most World Series wins in history, as they’ve lifted the trophy a staggering 27 times. Meanwhile, Los Angeles has won seven World Series in their 20 appearances.

Here’s a look at the World Series history between the two clubs:

1981: Dodgers 4, Yankees 2
1978: Yankees 4, Dodgers 2
1977: Yankees 4, Dodgers 2
1963: Dodgers 4, Yankees 0
1956: Yankees 4, Dodgers 3
1955: Dodgers 4, Yankees 3
1953: Yankees 4, Dodgers 2
1952: Yankees 4, Dodgers 3
1949: Yankees 4, Dodgers 1
1947: Yankees 4, Dodgers 3
1941: Yankees 4, Dodgers 1

The biggest storyline coming into this World Series is the matchup between Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani, the two men who are widely considered the best players on the planet right now. While Ohtani signed with the Dodgers in the offseason, Aaron Judge is a lifelong Yankee who worked his way up through their minor league system.

Ohtani spent the first part of his MLB career with the Angels, where he became the first successful two-way player since Babe Ruth. After undergoing Tommy John surgery last year, he signed a historic deal with the Dodgers before the 2024 season, during which he didn’t pitch. There has been some speculation that Ohtani could take the mound in the World Series, that has yet to be confirmed. Ohtani made history this year, becoming the first player in history to hit 50 home runs (53) and steal 50 bases (59). He’s expected to win the National League MVP Award when those awards are announced after the World Series. Ohtani won two MVP awards with the Angels, and is the favorite to pick up his third.

On the other side, Aaron Judge is far and away the frontrunner for the AL MVP. He’s coming off a season in which he hit 58 home runs and posted a remarkable .322 batting average. Should Judge win the award, it will be the second of his career.

Both Judge and Ohtani are looking for their first World Series win. Ohtani’s years with the Angels saw him never make the postseason, while Judge has been to the playoffs before, but neither of the two household names have ever been part of a World Series winner.
