Kia Recalls Nearly 40,000 Sorento SUVs Over Fire Risk
Kia America has issued a recall for more than 39,000 Sorento SUVs after identifying a potential fire risk linked to the vehicles’ heating and air conditioning systems.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem involves defective wiring in the HVAC system that could overheat and, in rare cases, ignite.
Details of the Recall
The recall covers 39,536 Sorento LX models manufactured between 2021 and 2023. Kia estimates that roughly 1 percent of those vehicles, or about 395 SUVs, may contain the defect.
The automaker said the issue stems from wiring supplied by a parts manufacturer in Mexico. The wires in question were thinner than required, which increases the chance of overheating.
Signs of the Defect
Drivers may notice early warning signs before a fire risk occurs. These include a nonfunctioning HVAC blower, a burning plastic smell inside the cabin, or visible smoke from the vents. Kia advises owners to stop driving if they experience these symptoms and contact a dealership for inspection.
Which Vehicles Are Affected
The impacted vehicles were assembled at Kia’s manufacturing plant in Georgia between September 10, 2020, and December 29, 2023. Kia confirmed that the 2024 Sorento features a different HVAC system design and is not included in the recall.
Next Steps for Owners
Kia dealers will replace the HVAC wiring harness and blower motor resistor at no cost to owners. Preliminary recall notification letters are scheduled to be sent to affected vehicle owners by November 24. Additional communication and repairs are expected to follow in December.
