How to Tell If You’re Getting an Amazon Prime Refund

If you’ve had an Amazon Prime membership at any point in the last few years, you could be eligible for a refund.

Amazon recently agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over how some users were enrolled in Prime and how difficult cancellation could be.

As part of the settlement, the company will now be issuing refunds to certain U.S. customers who met specific enrollment or cancellation conditions.

This isn’t something most people will need to sign up for. If you qualify, Amazon will handle the refund automatically.

Who May Be Eligible

Refunds apply to Prime subscribers in the United States who opened their Prime account between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025.

The settlement will focus on customers who were enrolled through certain sign-up screens that made it easy to join without meaning to, or who tried to cancel but were unable to complete the process.

Eligibility also depends on how you used Prime. If you used no more than three Prime benefits in any 12-month period after signing up, you may qualify for a direct refund. This includes benefits like Prime Video, free shipping, or Prime Music.

If you signed up outside of that date range, used a different enrollment page, or used Prime frequently, you may not be included in the automatic refund group.

How the Refund Will Work

If you’re eligible in the Prime enrollment lawsuit, you won’t need to do anything. Amazon will issue your refund automatically by December 25, 2025, up to a maximum of $51, depending on how much you paid in Prime fees.

Some customers who used a few more benefits may still have a chance to claim a refund manually.

Here’s how that will work: in early 2026, Amazon will send claim forms to those who signed up through one of the disputed enrollment screens and used up to ten Prime benefits in a year. Once that form arrives, you’ll have 180 days to complete it.

There may also be additional payout rounds if the initial refunds don’t use the full settlement amount, though those will likely happen later.

What This Means For Prime Members

This refund process is part of a broader FTC Amazon settlement focused on clearer choices and easier cancellation processes. It doesn’t affect how Prime currently works or how new users enroll today.

If you think you may qualify, the most important thing to do right now is simply wait. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive the refund without having to request it, and any follow-up claim forms will come directly from Amazon.

A Simple Next Step

For now, there’s no need to check your account or send in paperwork. Just keep an eye on your email toward the end of 2025 and into early 2026. If a claim form arrives later, filling it out right away will help you receive your refund.

Sometimes, consumer settlements feel complicated or hard to follow. But, this one is structured to be as automatic as possible, which means your best move is to let the timeline play out and only act if Amazon contacts you directly.
