Costco Recalls Ahi Tuna Over Listeria Contamination
Costco customers across the country are being urged to check their refrigerators after thousands of pounds of ahi tuna sold under the Kirkland Signature brand were recalled due to listeria contamination.
The Recall
Western United Fish Company, doing business as Annasea Foods Group, announced the recall of nearly 3,315 pounds of Kirkland Signature Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke after one of its green onion suppliers reported a positive test for listeria monocytogenes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) acknowledged the recall on Saturday, Sept. 20.
The affected tuna was sold on Sept. 18, 2025, in the deli section of Costco stores. Each package was labeled with item number 17193, carried the Kirkland Signature label, and had a sell-by date of Sept. 22, 2025.
Customers who purchased the recalled tuna are urged not to eat it. Instead, the FDA advises throwing the product away and contacting Costco for a refund. Consumers with questions can call 425-558-7809 or email info@annasea.com.
Where the Tuna Was Sold
The contaminated tuna reached Costco warehouses in 33 states. Among them: California, Texas, Florida, New York, Virginia, Washington, and many others. In total, 3,314.7 pounds of the recalled product were distributed to locations nationwide.
Here’s the full list of affected states:
Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
Why Listeria Is a Serious Concern
Listeria monocytogenes is a dangerous foodborne bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a condition that can lead to serious illness or even death in high-risk groups. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women face the greatest risks.
Symptoms of listeriosis typically appear within a few days to two months after eating contaminated food. They include:
Fever and muscle aches
Headache or stiff neck
Confusion or loss of balance
Nausea, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms
In pregnant women, miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature delivery
In severe cases, bloodstream or brain infections that can be fatal
The CDC warns that anyone in a higher-risk category who develops flu-like symptoms after eating the recalled tuna should seek medical attention immediately.
FDA and Company Response
The FDA said the recall was initiated after a supplier notified the company of a listeria-positive test result in green onions used in the poke dish. Annasea Foods Group said it is working with the supplier to determine the root cause of the contamination.
“We are continuing to work with our green onion supplier to determine the root cause,” the FDA noted in its statement.
For now, Costco customers are urged to remain cautious and follow the FDA’s guidance: dispose of the tuna, do not consume it, and monitor for any symptoms if you are in a higher-risk group.
What Consumers Should Do
Check your purchase: If you bought Kirkland Signature Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke on Sept. 18 with a sell-by date of Sept. 22, do not eat it.
Dispose and refund: Throw it away immediately and request a refund from Costco.
Monitor symptoms: If you feel ill after eating the tuna, especially if you’re pregnant, older, or immunocompromised, contact a healthcare provider.
Bottom Line
While only a specific batch of Kirkland Signature Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke is being recalled, listeria infections can have severe consequences. Public health officials stress the importance of erring on the side of caution by discarding the product and seeking medical advice if symptoms develop.
The recall serves as a reminder of the risks of foodborne illnesses and the importance of staying alert to FDA and company announcements about contaminated products.
