Costco Hot Dog Bourbon Sold Out in Hours — and People Are Offering $500 a Bottle

Costco's $1.50 hot dog and soda deal is one of the great untouchable institutions of American retail. It hasn't changed price since 1985. It has its own devoted fanbase. And now, apparently, it has its own bourbon.

A limited-release single-barrel Kentucky straight bourbon called "I Got That Dog In Me" quietly hit Costco shelves in Washington, D.C. late on March 27. By the following morning it was completely gone. One barrel. Sold out in hours at $85.99 a bottle.

The label features a photo of the legendary $1.50 Costco food court meal. The name comes from a meme about highly competitive, relentlessly driven people — but the hot dog connection is impossible to miss and clearly intentional. It's the kind of product that makes you wonder why it took this long for someone to think of it.

The Whiskey Itself

Rare Character Whiskey Co., out of Lexington, Kentucky, bottled the release — a 126-proof, 63.05% ABV whiskey that by all accounts hits hard in the best possible way. High-proof bourbon isn't for everyone, but for those who seek it out, the reward is usually a more intense, complex flavor profile with a serious kick of heat.

Reddit threads filled up quickly with tasting notes from the lucky few who grabbed a bottle. Reviewers described flavors of dark fruit, oak, and caramel, with heavy heat on the finish that the proof more than justifies. One commenter said they would "honestly overspend" for a bottle. Another posted they'd pay $500 if anyone had one available. For an $85.99 release, that's a remarkable secondary market premium — and a sign of just how much the concept resonated.

The art concept came from Costco's DC team, and the whole thing came together as a regional exclusive — a deliberate, local nod to one of the brand's most iconic offerings. "It was one single barrel only and sold out in hours," said Pete Nevenglosky, co-founder of Rare Character.

Why This Pairing Works

Rare Character is already well regarded in whiskey circles for cult-favorite single-barrel releases that tend to disappear fast. Pairing that reputation with the most beloved food court deal in America was either genius or inevitable. Probably both.

There's also something fitting about a $1.50 institution inspiring an $85.99 bottle. Costco has always played both ends of the value spectrum — warehouse-sized pragmatism on one side, Kirkland Signature Scotch and premium wine on the other. A limited-edition craft bourbon with a hot dog on the label fits the brand's personality perfectly.

What Comes Next

The good news for anyone who missed it is that more may be coming. Rare Character has also done regional bottlings for Costco's LA region, and Nevenglosky confirmed that future expansion is in the works — just not imminent. "Certainly more things to come though, I would not say in days' time," he said.

So keep an eye on your local Costco shelves. Just don't expect it to last long when it shows up — and maybe skip the food court line first.
