Why 'DoorDash Grandma' Keeps Appearing at Republican Events

Sharon Simmons delivered food to the White House on Monday in what was clearly a staged photo opportunity marking the one-year anniversary of Trump's No Tax On Tips policy. Trump tipped her $100, asked if she voted for him, told her he heard she was a great supporter, and then — in a moment that went viral immediately — asked her opinion on transgender athletes in women's sports.

Her response was pretty good.

"I really don't have an opinion on that. I'm here about No Tax On Tips."

Fair enough. But the appearance raised questions because this wasn't the first time Simmons has shown up alongside Republican politicians to promote Trump's agenda. Not even close.

Who Is Sharon Simmons?

According to DoorDash, Simmons has been dashing since 2022 and has completed more than 14,000 deliveries. She's been vocal about how the No Tax On Tips initiative has helped her family financially while her husband battles cancer. That's a real and meaningful story.

The question isn't really whether she's a genuine DoorDash driver. She is. The question is how she keeps ending up in exactly the right place at exactly the right time for Republican messaging purposes.

The Pattern

Back in July 2025, Simmons appeared at a Ways and Means Committee hearing in Nevada to speak in favor of Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill — the legislation that included the No Tax On Tips provision. She told members of Congress the bill would help her "stay more connected with my family" and help with her future.

Rep. David Kustoff of Tennessee shared the video with the caption — "Her story is just one of thousands across America who are finding financial breathing room thanks to @HouseGOP."

A few days before the White House appearance, Rep. Jason Smith of Missouri posted a video featuring Simmons making essentially the same pitch she later made at the White House. That video listed her as living in Missouri. The 2025 hearing video had her in Nevada. DoorDash says she recently moved to Arkansas.

Is She a Plant?

DoorDash was pretty direct about this. Public affairs official Julian Crowley pushed back on the speculation in a post on X.

"No one is claiming it was a real delivery. It was clearly and obviously a planned event to mark a new policy starting. To claim Sharon is a prop, plant or an actor is totally wrong and off base. She is a Dasher and she participated to support the policy that benefits her."

That's a reasonable point. Being used by a political party to put a human face on a policy you genuinely support doesn't make you a prop. Politicians do this constantly across the aisle — find real people whose real stories illustrate the point they're trying to make and put them in front of cameras.

What's a little unusual is how frequently Simmons has been that person for multiple Republican politicians across multiple states over the course of nearly a year. Most ordinary citizens who testify at a congressional hearing or appear in a local politician's social media video don't end up at the White House a year later getting a $100 tip from the president.

What She's Actually Advocating For

To her credit, Simmons has been consistent about what she cares about. The No Tax On Tips policy exempts tip income from federal income tax — something that genuinely matters to gig workers, service industry employees, and delivery drivers operating as independent contractors who often feel left out of policy conversations entirely.

"It is so often that independent contractors were left out so many times," Simmons said in Smith's video. "The fact that this has included us, I think it is awesome for us as delivery drivers."

When Trump tried to pull her into a conversation about transgender athletes she didn't take the bait. She stayed on message. That's either a sign of someone who genuinely cares only about the policy she's there to support — or someone who's gotten pretty good at doing this.

Maybe both.
