President Donald Trump said Monday that his administration has reached a deal involving TikTok, raising hopes that the popular video-sharing app may avoid a permanent ban in the United States.

In a statement, Trump described ongoing trade discussions with China as “going very well” and added that an agreement had been reached concerning a company “that young people in our Country very much wanted to save.” He also announced plans to speak directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this week.

While Trump did not release specifics, administration officials confirmed that a framework for an agreement is in place. According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the commercial terms have already been negotiated, and both sides appear to be working toward a resolution. However, he noted that certain elements may still require approval from Beijing before the arrangement can move forward.

The future of TikTok has been uncertain for more than a year, following legislation that required the app to cut ties with its Chinese parent company or face a nationwide ban. Although the law set strict deadlines, the Trump administration has repeatedly extended them, citing the app’s immense popularity and the desire to find a workable solution.

Past proposals included creating a new U.S.-based company to oversee TikTok operations, with a majority stake held by American investors and a minority share retained by its current owner. That plan collapsed after trade tensions escalated, but Trump’s latest comments suggest negotiations may be back on track.

Supporters of the law argue that TikTok poses national security risks due to its data collection practices, while others believe banning the app would unfairly limit free expression and online communities. For now, millions of American users are left waiting to see whether TikTok will remain available in the months ahead.

Details are still developing.
